A Newb's search for a Non-Restricted Tactical Rifle.

I thought I might throw together a quick image to help illustrate my point below, in my search for a suitable NON-RESTRICTED Tactical Rifle.

As a newb, I am really only aware of the 5 choices that I show in my little 'Price' line chart, beginning with an SKS, an M14, 858............THEN.....onto either an SL8 or XCR.

nonres_choices.jpg

At the end of the day, speaking purely PRICE-WISE......Is there something between an 858 and an SL8 or XCR ?
The $1,000-$1,500 price range for off-the-shelf Tactical rifles seems like a lonely place from what I can tell (although I am not aware of any other rifles at this point).

The choices that are clearly presented to me are either:

1) Buy a cheaper Rifle and MOD the hell out of it (bringing it into my desired $1,000-$1,500 price range).

2) Save and buy either an SL8 or XCR and call it a day (although personalization will still be done I am sure, making it a $3,000+ choice).

I really am not in a possition to make the commitment yet, to THIS hobby and purchase a $2,500+ Rifle......but I also don't want to 'beat a dead horse' by purchasing a $200 SKS and feeding it $1,000 in clearly pointless fashion either (which seems to be an easy trap to fall into....and quickly - no offense to $2,000 SKS owners).

I would rather NOT find myself spending 2x more on MODs than the initial cost of the rifle......such as ending up with an SKS that is worth $2,000+ but still shoots like a $250 SKS (but might look cool as hell).......lol

Are there any off-the-shelf available Tactical Rifles/Models that reside in the $1,000 to $1,500 price range that I have missed ?

How much is too much ?
Is it wrong to own an 858 that is worth (with parts invested) $1500++ ? (or even pointless to consider/build).....as it's basically doubling (and then some...) the initial price paid to acquire the rifle.
What is an acceptable limit ?

Help is always appreciated,
Thanks.
Allan

......Ar180b is worth about $1 000-1 200.

AR180b-2. From what I know, in GREAT demand and scarse availability unfortunately, so that is why I didn't include it on the list, as it's not a current off-the-shelf rifle anymore (although I could be wrong). Is it not discontinued ? (or, the sale of it NEW anyways ?)

It is however the only real answer that I know of to my problem.....but availability of it creates another problem in itself.

Buy a cheaper Rifle and MOD the hell out of it

What would the mods' purposes be? Would the mods allow you to improve your markmanship, speed and acquisition or would they just be add-ons for tacticoolness? There are a lot of mods that can be put on to enhance performance, but others are just for aesthetics or even just for kicks.

The AR180 would be a good choice in the medium to upper price range for a non-restricted black rifle and if you want to mod it, there are a few add-ons available.

There are some very cool rifles available to the buyer, but unless someone is into "irons" only, investing in quality optics should be the real focus (pun intended) for modding.

I was trying for the EXACT same thing. Wanted that middle of the road type of rifle that was fun to take out and blast away in the country with.

Ended up going with the 858.... and I have not regreted it yet...... I added a couple of things to it.... mainly a point sight...... but over all it is a good rifle for the price..... shoots good enough, ammo is cheap, makes good conversation at the range.

Just dont go too overboard on the "tacti-coolness" and throw the kitchen sink on it

(Also, you can get mods for that rifle for an inexpensive price)

Tavor could be put up there, but for how long?
Would buy one if I was fairly confident its status would not change.

Why would it change?
Tavor has a barrel length over 18", overall length of 29" and build from ground up as civilian semi auto rifle. it has the same chance of getting it's status changed as SA, XCR or SL8.

back to the topic at hand, seriously think about what you want to do with this rifle, it is no different than building cars, no sense buying and building a rice burner when all along you wanted a classic v8. especially since you are already thinking about "ending up with an SKS that is worth $2,000+ but still shoots like a $250 SKS".

non-restricted CX4 Storm? Yeah, you have to get a new barrel, but Epps can handle it for you, start to finish I beleive, so, it's almost off the shelf. ~1500?

Why would it change?
Tavor....... it has the same chance of getting it's status changed as SA, XCR or SL8.
Even as a newb, I would say that the Bullpup design is enough to paint a target on it to be re-classified without notice........thankfully a far cry from an SL8 or XCR.

Under the M14s pictured you need to add some sort of siphon symbol to denote the hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars that will actually be spent once you become addicted to the nearly endless pursuit of upgrades.

Then you could have some bizarre cross link from the $500 M14s to the Springfield M1A with icons representing rage and blind anger. :p

I like that chart:p
Thanks ;)

I think you should start off with an SKS and save up for something a little nicer and more accurate.

I would really like to have a couple of Rifles in the end, but I want rifles that I can shoot, not just take pics of and post about to look cool......although I did at first until I was reminded that I can not gopher-shoot with a Restricted on a regular basis.......or with ease in most locations (if any).

I have also been VERY careful not to use, or even hint to the word Assault , but rather used Tactical instead to keep from being on the receiving end of a s**t storm on the forum, as I know that some people are extremely sensitive when it comes to the useage of the term.

In reality though, I want a non-restricted Assault-type Rifle of sorts......my Zombie/Gopher/Fun gun that I can use....and that doesn't cost a fortune......but is still a decent rifle.

I do plan on investing some money into a bolt action .308, most likely a Remington 700 with tactical stock etc that will be the pinacle of my shootable collection (I am not aiming very high - no pun intended....lol).

I found this on the net and fell in love almost immediately.....

I just can't imagine getting to the range, picking up my SKS, shooting for half a day, then finishing off the rest of the day with something like this......
It would be like shooting with my eyes closed, then switching over to using 20/20 vision (again, no offense to the SKS guys out there).....

I still really would love to find a 'Happy' medium of sorts....for a number of reasons, not only financial.

Thanks to all who have replied thus far.

Re-barreled CX-4 Storm.

Per the Criminal Code of Canada, the only "assault" gun is one in which it fires fully-automatic (which you already know you can't own).

858 is nice but I found it a pain in the ass trying to clean and worrying about corrosion when out in the bush for a week at a time! My choice would be a Berreta CX4 in 9mm with a non restricted barrel! Light weight, cheap to shoot, and easy to clean! Slap a Bushnell 1x32 aimpoint clone on their and your good for shots out to 100m! Prolly gonna be the next big purchase for me!

If you don't mind a pump action, there's always the Remington 7615 as a choice for a tactical rifle. I've seen some dressed up pretty nice.

Also, the Benelli MR1 is supposedly coming to Canada sometime this year in a non restricted barrel length, and there were rumors that it should be under $2000 for one.
