A proper headshot

I personally don't like the video. Having a deers brains spray out doesn't appeal to me. I know that it didn't suffer, but it's still not a pretty sight. Its a little too brutal for me. Now they were culling and not hunting and that's something I know nothing about, so who am I to tell them how to do it. They did warn people on what was happening and it's aged restricted so I think the video is fine. I'm just not going to watch those types of videos.

I know I'll still go for the Heart/Lung shots myself. Might not put the deer down right away, but if I pull the trigger, it's because I'm sure it WILL go down. If and when I hunt, I do it ethically. I don't like seeing animals suffer, but I do like the taste and the hunt.

Totally agree with you Superbrad! This is far from being hunting, it is hideous, grotesque and a disgrace to outdoorsmen and society. Killing and culling is not hunting...............people should look up the definition of hunting from dictionaries and Wildlife Acts to find it's meaning. This is most insulting to those's who truly persue the act of hunting. Lot's of shallow and deviant people out there.

Totally agree with you guys.

It is not a question about being "squeamish", as some may have suggested. I have harvested my fair share of game in the past years, so I am very familiar with all aspects of the chase, kill, and of course, clean up. I do not go for head shots (to stay on topic), and will not condone the ones that do either...each his own. Nor will I "judge" the individuals that were part of this so call video presentation.

I simply feel that this "production" does not belong in a family oriented Hunting Forum. And to make myself clear ( as many around here are always waiting for an opportunity to slam others), I am not criticizing the OP.

what do you think your round does to the heart and lungs of the animal. only difference is it sprays out a single hole in the side.

last deer i took got hit with a 530 grain lead round from my muzzle loader. exploded the animals shoulder to the point the leg almost fell off, when i cleaned the animal the lungs were jelly and its heart fell apart in my hand. don't tell me that is any prettier than what was in the video. you just don't see it till you spill the animals guts on the ground.
let me tell you, even with that much damage to the deer, it still ran 50 feet into the bush, and the gouges in the ground from it flailing it certainly suffered (along with having to clean the animal after after it thrashed in the pool of blood it made.)

if i could reliably hit an animal in the head i would certainly do so. id rather it drop dead in one spot and not be flailing around. id also like to keep all the meat intact.

As someone looking for a Mentor to teach me the ropes of hunting (no dad or grandpa, or any family member/close friend/friends who do it) I see at least some value in videos like this. Until some guy's nice enough to put up with me for a couple trips my only source of education is the internet. It comes with the usual pitfalls of false information, bias and opinion, but it all has to be filtered through my lens and taken for what it is. Without having shot a deer in the head, I can now know exactly what goes on. Before I knew the technical aspects, like it's not a good idea because of shooting jaws off, etc etc , but now I know more of the visceral qualities.

I also wouldn't show this to my mother, because she already thinks I'm some gun loving lunatic, so I see the PR side of things as well.

Such is life....

Oh I've had my fair share of seeing and hearing animals die and it's never pretty.

I think it's up to every hunter to choose where he's going to shoot and deal with it from there.

Hopefully at the end of the season ... we both end up with some deer in the freezer.

Less then 100%...should lock you out of the EE IMO!!!

I think that is probably a bit harsh. Because, ya know what? Life happens. People miscommunicate and misunderstand each other, or we all make mistakes. Less than 100% Trader Ratings can happen from something other than intentional dishonesty.

But! When a guy has a long track record of dishonesty and crooked deals... He should be banned from not only the EE, but CGN! IMO only, and I fully understand that it's not my house and not my decision to make... :)

so many people, including many hunters, are so removed from the 'reality' of harvesting game or other animals, that is disgusting and gfar more disrespectful to the animal than this video. Pretending that the "majestic beast" acknowldeged the hunter's prowess and died a dignified death...yadda yadda...is crap.

you kill an animal,...there is nothing majestic or admirable about it. You, with all the advantage on your side, take an animal for which in most cases, there is absolutely no "need" to do so.

There is reverence, sometimes remource, possible even pride... but it is not pretty.

The further we try and remove ourselves from the reality of what it is, tyhe more we become the desensitized twits which are so abundant today.

I will show guts, I will show blood, I will show quarters hung.... this is what it is...more people need to be in touch with what it is.

This has niothing to do with antis,...it has to do with hunters pretending ... even midleading in some cases...

here is me cutting out a tongue...such a faux pas

never had tried frying tongue , any good , how do you prepare it? please PM as this thread is circling the drain....

IMHO the headshot vid is not necessary and is disrespectful to the animal.
Bordering on snuff film material.

Vids of field dressing are different IMHO.
Just how I feel about it.

Also one of the commenters makes a good point about the possible dangers of CFJ and spreading the prions in the soil.

Instant death...is disrespectful? The video...would have "embarrassed" the deer had it been able to see it? :jerkit:

I guess a heart/lung shot where they then run for their life...scared in in pain...is the better way. People pull heart/lung shots too...losing animals sometimes or having it gut shot and take weeks to die.

PROPER head shot placement (IF YOU CAN DO IT), is the best way if your solely worried about the animals welfare. There is a bonus of not wasting any meat and putting holes into the hide. There is no way you can say that is what you care about, the animals welfare and "respecting" it...and then shoot in and have it run because it didn't die instantly. Or shooting a deer with an arrow and having to wait an hour to follow it to make sure it died. Shooting ducks out of the sky crippling them to have them fall and smash themselves to death or be drowned. Trapping an animal on a line only to have its head bashed in or shot point blank, no doubt in fear the whole time. There will ALWAYS been blood and guts involved in killing and dressing an animal.

The #1 thing you folks who are upset about this is that its "graphic"....should he have used an FMJ (illegal) it would not have looked as bad BUT if your gonna kill something...kill it right, there is no such thing as over kill. "Blowing up the head" was a 100% positive way to kill it and insure of it, something a FMJ might not have done. THERE WAS NOTHING DISRESPECTFUL DONE TO THIS ANIMAL...IT WAS A CLEAN SHOT AND AN INSTANT DEATH.

The fact that your okay with a shot taking much, much longer to kill an animal then an instant head shot would because all because you do not have to see it suffer, is sick and cowardly. What do you think happens to the animals insides when the bullet explodes in it? Its organs become mush...but because its "hidden" its okay. If your are not in-tune with what really is happening to the things YOU ARE KILLING then you need to stop hunting. Today. Killing is pretty...but it also doesn't HAVE to bother you either.

Is rape okay...as long as its done in the dark so you do not need to see it?

Do not like it...go take up knitting...careful not to poke yourself tho, there might be blood which might be disrespectful to someone in the world!!!

Fried wouldnt be my favorite, but certainly give it a try. A slow braising or boiling, is the best.

Take the tongue pepper it, salt it,...use a fair amount of dill, some onion powder, rosemary, and i like to put on a bit of franks hot sauce.
Lay down a few leaves of romaine lettuce and grate some carrots and thinly slice some celery. Put the carrots and celery on the leaves and put the tongue on top, wrap and tie. Put in a baking pot with a can of beer, or a cup of apples juice or wine and let it bake for 6 hours on 300. I should have mentioned to make 3 or four supercial slices on the tongue with a knife.

After it's done, let it cool...peel the tongue and let cool in the fridge. slice like deli meat.

I'm kind of on the fence about outright condemning this practice and I'll tell you why.
Number one, this is a culling operation and every ounce of protien saved means more money earned.
Number two is as pointed out by jeff we have no problem striving to headshoot turkeys, and with small game such as rabbits few would argue about the birdshot pellets or 22LR bullet to the head, to again save on loss. Fact is a headshot is instant death. But also the flipside of that is, humans make mistakes and a fudged up headshot on deer can lead to the very very disconcerting sight of a wounded animal running away with body parts hanging in pieces and at least a bloody jaw. Not cool. Spinal shots on deer with archery equipment or a poor shot with a rifle, is another example of needless suffering when the animal does not die forthwith. I don't really mind where my shotgun pellets strike on varmints or small game as long as I get instant (or at least nearly instant) death. I do not do this on purpose while deer hunting as I feel better choosing the heart-lung larger vital area. Niether have I ever been involved in a commercial culling operation. So I feel no need to comment on this further, other than the two are totally seperate categories of harvest.

Edit: A proper headshot on big game such as deer? Not for me guys. These eyes are too old for that terrible risk.

It's a very different practice and a much higher percentage shot to shoot turkey in the head with a well patterned shotgun and turkey load as compared to a single projectile on a deer head... I personally don't believe in headshots as I have seen too many starving and jawless deer than I care to mention here...

I think you have hit it on the head here Brutus (pun intended).... Culling and hunting are two very different practices...

Never seen any wounded gut shot deer? Or ones with legs almost blown off? Arrows stuck in their ass?

So its ONLY headshot takers that mess up. Only.

Never seen an arrow in a deer yet but yes, I must admit I have seen gut shot deer.... that being said most people aim for the boiler room and not the melon, especially when deer drives are involved so it would make sense that you would see gutshot deer....

Reallistically speaking the size of the success zone for a boiler room shot is much larger than that of a headshot.... (A deer's actual brain is the size of a walnut, amyone who has done any brain tanning will tell you this).... I am pretty sure anyone who hunts knows the size of a deer's heart and lung area.... much larger....

At th eend of the day it is up to the hunter to decide whether they have the skill required to mak ethe shot in question... Unfortunately I have seen far too many hunters with more bravado than skill....
