A proper headshot

So far the only head shots I have taken on animals have been on rabbits...no pictures tho!!!

Got one on an insurgent in the sand box tho...but again no pictures, taking pics of that stuff is kinda frowned upon for PR reasons. Much less graphic then the deer in the original video tho.
 
Its interesting that this thread has turned into the usual headshot ethics arguement but I haven't seen much/any discussion over the fact that they video talks specifically about 'best practices' for doing such a shot. Not all headshots are created equal and there was a learning opportunity in the video that I hope wasn't missed by the people who viewed it.
Keen readers of this post will realize I'm saying that sometimes a headshot is the right shot and sometimes it isn't and the variables that determine that aren't a simple binary decision over hunting/culling.

Wow, I can't remember the last thread that went so badly, great stuff, very entertaining, and enlightening. Nothing like an emotionally charged thread to reveal who people really are. Not a lot of real value though, then again, it is CGN, perhaps I should lower my expectations.

The only problem with the internet is every body talks so big it ruins it for all the men and women who have done the real deal.

No need. I for one assume people speak the truth, unless you catch them lying. Thank you for your service, good to have you home. Don't sweat one rude comment, it was a false assumption on his/her part, and would not have been intended to offend someone telling the truth. His/her bad.

Well, I took you off ignore to read that reply... You'll be back on the list in a moment. If you have served, thanks... but anyone who HAS served and HAS had to make those kinds of shots on behalf of their country, would have to be suffering from some serious disassociative mental health issues to spout off about it on an online thread on "head shots" to animals... your foot isn't the only thing wounded... I hope you find the help you need.
 
Took a round to the ankle...which pretty much hacked it off but a 7.62x54R will do that...boot held it in place so it didn't look too bad until the boot was cut off. Was a #### day.

Thanks for your kind words 5440fight. Sadly I knew some guys there that made it off much worse then a lost foot.

I'll step-up to the plate. Many people look-up to professional athletes as hero's, moreover in our country the hockey player. To me the "true hero is the soldier". Thanks Jeffcarr88 for your service as a hero by risking your life so I and others enjoy freedom.:cheers:

fascinating video. referring to the culling vs. hunting debate. at the critical moment of the actual trigger pull and firing of the bullet, hunting - as we know it - and the culling being demonstrated are identical, are they not? these days with the word "hunting" being a relative term the results shown in the video could be perfectly reproduced by shooting from a solid rest in a tree stand. the proverbial paths taken to get the point of the shot may be different, but the moment of the shot is going to be the same no matter where you go.

its like the geneva convention saying expanding bullets for battle cause unneccessary pain and suffering, but we will drop a 2000lb JDAM that will reduce a human target back to its base elements. carbon and hydrogen and oxygen and whatever else there might be...IBTL

Dis-associative mental health issues?? Really? So, since I don't have flashbacks, endless sleepless nights filled with bloody nightmares, hundreds of hours of counseling, dozens of prescriptions for meds to get me through the day, I am somehow mentally deficient? I believe that it is BECAUSE I hunted my whole life, raised, slaughtered, butchered, and ate our own animals that I am NOT a basket case.

Like the famous line from the Marine Sniper to the news reporter when asked what he felt when squeezing off a round at some insurgent and his answer was"recoil"? You mean, that's kind of sickie? If you even knew half of what it was like, you would shut up too. Conversations here are much different than conversations between soldiers. THAT is where this is talked about, where guys like you can't get your panties in a twist because you have never seen life leave the eyes of another human intent on taking yours.

I wasn't going to post in this thread after reading all of it because it simply wasnt worth the time and effort. But, now, since I am mentally deficient, I will post.

I HEADSHOOT AS MANY ANIMALS AS I CAN. WITHIN MY LIMITATIONS, WHICH I KNOW BECAUSE I SHOOT. I SPEND FAR LESS TIME CHASING WOUNDED ANIMALS AND DRAGGING THEM FOR MILES OUT OF THE WOODS. IF THE ANIMAL IS WITHIN 200yds, IS CALM AND UNWORRIED, AND PRESENTS THE HEAD, IT IS GONNA GET A ROUND IN IT FROM ME. THEN I WILL GO OVER AND BEGIN THE PROCESS OF GUTTING AND LOADING IT. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE RACK BECAUSE I DON'T CARE ABOUT TROPHIES. HUNTING IS A WAY OF PROVIDING FOOD FOR MY FAMILY AND I DON'T HAVE TO PROVE MYSELF TO ANYONE. THE PROOF IS ON THE TABLE OF ME AND THE OTHER FAMILIES I HELP FEED. PEOPLE I MENTOR DON'T GET THE HEADSHOT OPPORTUNITIES UNTIL I KNOW THEY CAN DO IT.

my wife hunted with me for 3 years before she was allowed to go for head/neck shots. That's several hundred rounds out of her hunting rifle, several thousand rounds from a .22.

Oh, and BTW, you should put my Dis-associative, mental a$$ on ignore as well, thanks.

And Jeff, I came home with all my parts. sorry you didn't, but some of my buddies didn't come home at all. Congrats, and esp., in your case, continue to drive the body and shoot the foot. ;)

And I agree...headshots are ONLY for those with the skill and patience to make them. That should be common sense...

This video here...is 100x worse to me then a headshot, they where shooting it in the "boiler room" quite a few times as well

Fellas, this has gone waaayyyyyyy of topic.

What you see in the video and hear as a narivative is the explanation for culling PARK deer, this is not hunting its CULLING, under a controlled environment.
These animals are culled as part of a business they are sold for human consumption in a game dealers or butchers, this "argument" about ethics of head shots doesnt apply in this case as what you see is a fraction of what you dont. You dont see the tractor driving around with the guys shooting shotguns so the deer get used to the "bang" so they dont spook as easily.
Also and most importantly, these guys have experience, they shoot more deer in a month than most over here do in a life time.
