A Remington 783 in 7mm Rem Mag.

Still waiting on my 783 in 270 to arrive
But I've gathered some H4831, IMR4350, and RAMSHOT BIG GAME
bullets inhave are 150gr Hornady round nose, some 130 balistic
Tips and 130gr BTSP Hornady, and some 130-140gr SST
other powders I have are IMR4320, H335, H322, BLC-2
IMR4831, IMR4895,H4895, H450, ones gotta work lol...

Well, just got back from the range. Had it all to myself for two hours. Shot the 783 and my old FN Sporter 30-06 fudd rifle.

The good news is the rifle is trying to be really accurate, with 100 yd groups right at 1 1/4" with the very first loads tried. At the end of the session, I ran all the pigs of the rail at 300 meters with ease...one shot with each load without changing the scope setting.

The really good news is the barrel is extremely fast, 160 gr bullets going well over 3100 fps. That is packing the mail.

The bad news is twenty-four rounds fed, fired, and extracted..... not one case ejected. All but a few ended up smokestacked in the ejection port. The others fell back on top of the magazine.

Hmmm, No one needs a hunting rifle that will not function properly. How does something like this ever leave the Remington factory?

That's bad to hear Ted. It sounds like the port should be opened up a tad, but that should have been addressed at Remington before they started shipping the buggers, bummer. I figured I'd have to open the port a bit for a .458 build, but to have to do it with a factory chambering just plain sucks ass.:(

Check the bolt out, might be a sticky ejector....or maybe Remington forgot to install it lol.
Mine launches 30'06 brass like a semi, if I don't put my hand over the port brass are 2 benches over.

Yer right on that one, had a brain fart on the port size...it's more than ample. Ted should disassemble the bolt and clean the factory crud out of the bugger, especially the ejector plunger, give 'er a light lube & reassemble. If that don't cure it, then the plunger spring may be a weak one.

My buddies 783 out shoots his 700 hands down
Groups are atleast 1/2" smaller using same ammunition

Which proves absolutely nothing about the accuracy potential of each rifle. With a different load, the 700 may shoot smaller groups.

It's not the ejector. The rifle ejects loaded rounds without a hitch. Empty cases are hitting the rear end of the ejection port and getting stalled there. Loaded rounds hit there too, but have enough inertia to keep on keepin' on, and make it out all the way.

There were some 788 rifles that did the exactly the same thing many years ago. They needed the rear of the port radiused further back to allow empty cases to clear. I had a 22-250 that was fixed up pretty quickly with a, wait for it, ........Dremel tool and a few small Cratex wheels to polish it when done.

The real reason I wanted to try this rifle was the Marlin rifles were absolutely foolproof, as well as accurate, but they did not chamber them to 7mm Rem and 300 Win.

Again, how does something like this get passed by by Remington? It will be interesting to hear if anyone else has the similar problem in a 783 magnum chambering?

Freedom Group is the reason behind the F-up's coming from the Big Green these past years. Folks like us who love to tweek rifles to get the most out of them don't mind the extra work, especially on units that are built on a price point sales basis. Any maker worth their salt would never go public on the Exchange.
Surest way to be sucked into cheapening product to boost sales.

Haul out the Dremel mate, the rifle is worthy.:)

Good morning, Friends and Neighbours,

Figured it out. This rifle has a left-hand model bolt head!

Ted ;)

Seriously, or are you just messing with us? Because I can see that happening on the Remington assembly line lol..... bolt head installed upside down. If that is all it is then just knock the pin out, flip it over and reinstall.

That would require opposable thumbs.......

That's not going to work unless the bolt shank is drilled.

Ewww-bouy, quality control.............?

He's right, it's a LH bolt head. Look at the position of the ejector pin in you picture and in his. His is above the centreline, while yours is below.

As a side note, I find it amazing how closely the savage designs were copied in the 783.

Thing is they don't make a left hand version.....but I see now where the ejector pin is drilled in the wrong spot, so yeah, a new bolt head is in order....more then just a flip required.
Contact Gravels, they are the Rem warranty center and should sort that out quickly lol
