Gday, its been a while since i've laid down a Sambar stag, since the nye bush fires which devestated the bush an left what deer survived very shellshocked, ive been monitoring an documenting the bush and the deers since day 1 , and being August, my birth month, coinciding with some of the areas rutting, its always great to be out esp this morning as there was unexpectedly low snow and as i drove out to the huntin spot i could see the whispy clouds an white dusting of snow on the top around 600m abs, it was primo sambar hunting weather!

i will add a story of the hunt tomorow or so, im knackered as i type this, just came inside an its 9pm, i left home at 6am, shot him at 10:30 and got home about 3, prepping the hide and finished caping the face ....

lots of video of him an shot him on camera, so will link you guys when i edit it and upload it.

for now, a Pearler to open the Account for 2020.

shot him with the A bolt 30-06 180gr woodleighs, hit the shoulder, didnt exit and the tuff bugger carried it pretty well, as you will see... the projie didnt exit from 50m or so across the gulley, an i didnt recover it after i caped the animal, but we are going back in a few days an hopefully by then the dogs havnt eaten the bullet?? but we plan on shootin dogs on the carcass -an il dig for the bullet :)

3 encounters with this stag but no good footage , its been a great challenge to try an relocate him a few times in the system where he roams!
mixed emotions prior to the shot , but in the end it was the hunt that lead me to the moment... its what i love... the chase.

HooRoo!

Nice bull, if the vegetation responds to fire like it does here, that will be a premium hunting area going forward.

Thanks for the replies an congrats Fellas.

will answer a few

true, it should grow back well but get TOO thick to hunt within 2-3 years perhaps, definatly by 5.. but some big antlers expected next year for sure :)

Even burnt, that is a beautiful looking landscape. Nice looking buck: for the guys like me that don't know much about Sambar... is that a large or average size animal?
Hey mate, that Stag is about ya "average" where they start to look "good" , the trophy number here is 30 inches long, anything over 25-26 inches with some maturity and mass starts to look good! are all cunning buuggers :) this one has a great shape, which is hard to find sometimes.

Well done and thanks for sharing! I really enjoy seeing your hunts from down under.
No worries mate, thanks for veiwing an glad you enjoy something different

The mature guys certainly get mature by being cunning: white tail are like that here. When I see pictures of the lovely places other guys here hunt, I get to thinking I should post a few of my own... the familiarity of my place sometimes cause me to doubt that someone else might enjoy them what with it being new and different to them.

everyone loves a photo or story on a forum! we arnt all here to show off our Ruger collections :D :p

im heavy on an australian forum, an theres just a huge lack of content, everyone lurks, awaiting someone to post something, but they dont help them selves, by creating content themselves :)

i dont see many white tails..... but sure love a WT, Muley or anything you guys can see out in the bush :)

Congrats!
Looks like another great adventure to add to your memory bank!
Would love to get down under to hunt sambar!

Mate i hope you do one day, they are such an elusive animal and you'll need a week to get to know how they operate, hopefully your host or contact puts you on good ground and you get to see a few! they are awesome. the hinds make a great challenge an should not be sneezed at! :)

thanks mate, might see you down under one day in the hills
