A scope to see bullet holes at 100m

Hello all. I realize the "help please" for scoping has been used a number of times, but I am hoping that a few won't mind helping out another CGN'r again. I have a new Savage 12 VLP in 223 that I am looking to scope so that I can see bullet holes out to 100m. It is highly likely that this gun will only see range duty in fact - punching paper.

I currently have one of the new Vortex crossfire II in 6-18x44AO on order, but delays in getting one and more internet research than my brain can stand are making me second guess everything.

I am now thinking of other scopes and have looked at the Mueller 8-32x44, and also the Bushnell Elite 4200 8-32x40AO and 6-24x40AO(although these ones are a little more than I am looking to spend).

Anyone have any suggestions on 1. the power of scope to see bullet holes at 100m, and 2. Any suggestions on scopes in the lower price range/ or comments on the scopes above. Any constructive comments are appreciated. Thanks.
 
There is only 1 scope that I classify that has an unfair advantage. This scope model brand I do not compare to any other brands but many other brands try to compare to it...

There for if you would like to see your 22 cal wholes in the paper @ 200 meter's I would only say with out a doubt this would be the brand I would entrust my money to.

Now as for lower end scopes are conserend I would post your budget and we could have a fair compairison of what optic brands would give you good optic quaility for the price range you are looking for.
 
either something is wrong with my scope, or my eyes are just that bad...but I cannot see any details, such as shots, on the paper at 100 yards with my Bushnell 3200 3-9x40.

that said, when I was shooting the other week, a guy was punching paper with his .22 and had a fixed 24x42 Sightron. I could see the imperfections on the pushpins holding the paper up! :D
 
Anything over 9 power should work, with scopes you get what you pay for. Bushnells Elites are good scopes but their cheaper models are not.
 
Hang in there. From my experience, the Vortex you ordered will do the job nicely. I doubt you will be dissapointed for the money spent.
 
I would hold tough with that vortex. You also have a thumbs up on the Mueller from frank77. High maginfication variables with low price, usualy = very low quality. Vortex makes a very good product, and many say it is a great bang for the buck.
 
Really appreciate all of the comments guys - I will stick with the Vortex order for another week or so, and go from there. Thanks again.
 
what your looking for

If you want to see holes clearly at long ranges you should look at a fixed power scope. I shoot a lot of bench rest competition, and in most cases new shooters all start with variable scopes but sooner or later they all go to a fixed power scope, for that very reason. They have much better clarity then variables set at high powers. Just how the internal lenses work is what Ive been told by all optic manufactures.

Wow, if you guys can see 22 holes with you 9power at 100 yards you must have bionic eyes or you are bs ing. There would be no need for spotting scopes if those low power scopes were that good. You need a clear scope and higher power. Your vortex should do fine.
 
I like your setup - very similar to mine... Model 12 VLP .223 w/ Nikon 6-18x40.
Can see the holes with ~10x magnification @100. 18x is tons of magnification.
 
I think that this issue is based on glass and optical quality as much as magnification.

The resolution and clarity is what will aide you in making out bullet holes at 100 yards.

There is some common sense to this also. A 1-4x power Leupold high end scope obviously won't do it, but a quality 3-9x will.

Not sure what your budget is but getting into the Zeiss Conquest line of scopes is where this quality of glass begins to become apparent.

If you can compare a few different scopes in a shop or with friend with scopes then you will be able to see, look at something fine, maybe with writing and different colors, out on the range a milk jug and it's label are excellent standards to compare by.

No need for bionic eyes to see .22 caliber bullet holes at 100 yards, or even 200. It helps if you choose your targets so the bullets land on white instead of black, and avoiding some of the total crap sold will go a long way as well.

I use orange target dots on a sheet of white printer paper. In cold weather I routinely pound a staple through the dot since the glue will sometimes let go. With a definitely bargain grade 4-12 VX 11 I can easily use the staple for an aiming point at 100. With a 3-9, seeing the staples is a sometimes thing.

It is possible to spot .22 holes at 100 yards with a 4x, providing the optics are good (it is difficult, I use a spotting scope most of the time, but it can be done). I do have very good vision though.
