a sneak peek at Canada's first custom composite, precision M14 stock, with new pics

Thomas, I only mention the kydex cheekpieces and buttspacers+standard buttpad as effective cheaper alternatives that can be offered and easily fielded minus the weight and expense.

For a dedicated precision stock on a target rifle, I'd like to see something more like a proper embedded cheekpiece lifter such as:

Again, buttspacers are easy, which I like but a hardcore target model could go with something like this:

It is hard to tell from the pics you posted since there isn't a direct profile pic of the rifle. I really like the vertical necking of the grip(which I have also done on a project).

How much higher is the comb? How much effect does it have on using standard ironsights(moot point since a target rifle of this nature is probably scoped, but entertain me please)? ie if one were to transition to irons, would one end up goosenecking sideways to see?

yes, we are thinkin along the same lines hehehe
BUT the base model of the m14sa2 is not specifically a target stock. It is designed to be the basis for a precision stock and an all around hunting stock due to it's ergonomics.
I'll probably offer this stock with several variations from kydex riser/spacers right up to exactly the gadgets winz shows in his pics.
BUT I would also like to offer an entry level version that is a lower price point. to handcraft a stock as I do and be able to sell it in the 500.00 ballpark...... the fancy risers and buttpad adjustment devices will have to be upgradeable options.

if i have my way, this stock will also have an oprod guide block like the sage stocks have...... but i'm still working on that option.

as for sling swivel studs and bipod mounts/studs...... I agree, 2 studs up front for the sling and bipod...... or a short picatinny rail and seperate sling stud.

that said... what do most folks prefer for bipod mounting..... a rail mount type or sling stud mounting type?

as for the current cheek position of the stock in the pic..... I have lowered it very slightly from my original m14sa2 design so as to allow for use of the irons without slouching into the coomb. everyone's facial geometry is different, but for me i can transition from irons to optics with ease with the current coomb position.

at this point in the game, the key to any stock i make is the action inlet itself.
given time and imagination..... I can make the external shape of the stock to what ever i can dream up.
on the list for future models to be released will be a standard stock
an E2 stock
the m14s-cqb
maybe, due to requests a small run of dragunov style
and i've been toying with the idea of an underfolder m14 stock LOL

very cool. I like the idea of an entry level stock with a host of optional upgrades that the buyer can pick and choose from, so he/she can have it built the way they want.

And as a hunting stock, will the weight be close to the USGI weight?

If so, I'm waiting for the colored versions to order.

the whole reason this stock got designed was , A) the original m14sa2 was my personal vision of a hunting stock for the m14 platform and to me it was a perfect fit, intended originally for my rifle only, till someone said i should make more hehehe...... and B) i have a client with large hands who asked for some fairly specific specs on his m14sa2 and I obliged, and the new m14sa2 shown in the pics has been born from that

Yes, very similar weight to the usgi stock. the technology in composite materials has come a long long way since the days when the usgi fiberglass stocks were made. One of the key delays in my stock making endeavors has been the R&D that has gone into material selection and material vs resin blends for optimum performance and durability. I don't have a final weight of the standard "entry level version" but will once a standardized buttpad feature has been decided on, installed and placed on the scale ;)

i enjoy the rifle work, building, repairing and customizing....... but my real passion is in the stock making and am making the transition shortly to less rifle work and much much more stock making work.

I will be starting the first production run (6 units) of this stock and the 2nd run of the new m14s-cqb by the end of this coming week ;)

I got to play with the hunting prototype at Tom's this past weekend. (Tom says I am the first person other than him who has touched it. :D) Both my son and I plan on hunting with our M14's this fall and this stock would be the way to go as far as we are concerned. With this stock design you can bring your supporting arm way back in the area of the mag for a nice snug hold. Also there is no way a 5 round mag is going to snag on brush. The base of the mag is inline with the stock. However Tom showed us how easy it was to remove the mag for quick mag changes. If you're going to scope it, the cheek rest is nice and high. Personally I would prefer the swivel stud for a bipod mount. Remember this stock was designed with the M14 Hunter in mind. I am no expert on butt plates- adjustable or otherwise but it appears to me the way this stock is designed you could go any way you wanted- simple or complex.

I managed to get some assistance with getting some pics uploaded to my pic host.
here's some pics of a right hand side cutaway section of the action inlet i am able to produce with the precision molding set ups i have. Note the inside is an exact duplicate of the fiberglass usgi stock other than the connector and selector areas are not cut out ;) The section below even shows the trigger seat and receiver bedding lands. These are not added in after, these are part of the molding process. this part is rock solid carbon fiber/fiberglass and epoxy resins.... there is NO FILLER involved. this piece was chosen as a cutaway for pics as it does have a few blemishes that did not pass my QC criteria :D

Hi Thomas.

Remember you mentioned I could demo a cheek rest for you, about a 8 months ago? I sent you a PM about it, but got no response. I would like to empathize that you asked me to demo it, but you stopped communicating with me. I own a stock of yours, which I do like, so I am used to the slow to nil communication from you, but a simple message saying you would rather I didn't test it would have been somewhat respectful. I don't get on this board much anymore, but I do check my messages, and I have received nothing from you. I just chalk this up to why many of us shop in the US, regardless of what the forum owners tell us is illegal to import, something proven to be erroneous on many occasions. Thanks Bud! :)

hey berger, it was sent out to you. i am now supposing it did not get there?
a while back i asked for volunteers to demo the ultimate front sight mod and post thier feedback...... i did 5 or 6 for fellow members, for free (90.00 service) and covered the cost to ship thier gas assemblies back after modification..... not one person posted a thing, they just took the free mod and that's the last i heard...... so i have given up on sending out free samples for folks to demo. My apologies if your cheek piece did not arrive, not the first time items have disappeared into the abyss. As for replies, have a cgn and email inbox like mine and trying to keep up is nearly a 5 hour job most days, that and working 8 to 12 hours a day in the shop, i need to prioritize my responses and you have my apologies if your message got missed. emailing me is much better most days.

anyhow, new stock production is well under way, anyone wishing to order , please email me ONLY.
thanx ;

I have just finished setting up for reproducing a standard M14 fiberglass stock, nothing fancy, and a near duplicate dimensionally to a NM walnut stock. It will have the usgi spec action inlet..... BUT you will have to swap over your wood stock's ferrule and front sling mount. Due to this I can offer them at a better price.
so let's see a show of hands...... if i could bring you such a stock..... for about 300.00 ...... who's in? I'd need to see 20 to 25 interested parties in order to go ahead with a run.

once the new M14SA2 is into production I will be taking the design in a new direction. i'm thinkin adjustable butt pad, adjustable cheek rest and I am toying with a full length aluminum action bedding block...... but this is down the road several months and obviously it will be a high end price point.

the current m14SA2 that you see in development here will run in the 500.00 ball park, but i can not give you all a final price just yet. Anyone wishing to get on a list for when these come availlable (weeks from now) please email me (do not p.m.)

You can put me down for one of your new m14SA2 precision hunter stocks. Any colour options? Since I plan to hunt with it something in green/brown camo perhaps?

I vote for a double sling swivel arrangement. Whats the benefit of a full aluminum bedding block - more accuracy? Have you finalized on the price?

colour options i can currently offer are Forest Brown, Kahki, OD green and black. I also offer my own Ghost Cedar camo which can be seen in many pics of my stocks on CGN and on the standard M14SA2 Hunter shown in my dealer add..

I'm still working out some details on the new stock, but will start taking orders by next week, pricing to start at 499.00 and up depending on options chosen. I will not be introducing adjustable butt or adjustable cheekrest at this time.
the full action bedding block is in design phase and i honestly don't think i'll be able to make that available till next year, and only if I actually take the idea to completion. The goal is to utilize a oprod guide barrel block like the sage/AKM and trigger pad adjustment screws like the troy and a full aluminum action inlet...... all encased in premium composite materials....... a wee bit ambitious..... maybe....... we'll see.

You clearly had a bad run at judging customers' character then IMHO. Lots of people post reviews, often even when the product was NOT free ;)

It's not like i'm all broken up about it LOL :D
i do have a handful of cgn'ers who i've come to know very well who will be my guinea pigs from now on. I also realize folks have busy lives and things can slip thier minds..... or maybe no time to shoot thier rifle due to work or family or what ever..... so it's all good ;)

but this thread is about new custom composite M14 stocks, made here in Canada, and these are far beyond the testing stage and are in production now. The first round of M14S-CQB stocks and the first 2 of the special purpose version of the M14SA2 (pics of prototype in first post) will be arriving at thier destinations within a week or so...... perhaps we'll get some reviews :D
