A special rifle

Blaser k95 , spend the rest on optics , what’s left anyways. As I get older I appreciate simplicity . Word of warning that I’m sure you’re already aware off - once you hold /pack one everything else will seem unnecessary.

I’d go with the s2 blaser and I know what one your looking at and it’s a good deal..my dad had that exact gun in the same cartridge and both barrels would put the bullets in the same hole at 100 yards because you can self regulate the barrels...another gun I wish he never sold..lol

For 6k, I'd look at cooper, or I'd buy a beater Husqvarna 98, rob the action, and get an outfit like gunco in Ottawa to build me a custom Mauser hunting rifle to my specs. Been there and done that myself, the nicest if which was a .35 Whelen.

In this price range, as a forever rifle with special meaning - forget plastic or aluminum tactical stuff. Get a work of art that will still be desirable when you pass it down. Ideally a nicely figured walnut stock should be on your list.

I've owned the Blaser S2, R93 and R8. Without question, they are superbly made firearms. I immensely enjoyed shooting and hunting with them, especially the S2 which has self regulated barrels, also chambered in the 9.3x74R. I had both barrels shooting in the same hole at 100 yards, and they were parallel up to 250 yards, I believe they were 250 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip which I reloaded.
Another rifle which caught my eye is the Chapuis, their single and double rifles. Great value for what they offer and great reviews. I currently have a Josef Just Kipplauf which is fun to shoot and will be using it this autumn for deer hunting.

Most (98%) custom rifles will lose significant value... they lose less value if your custom choices stay "middle of the road," bit that kind of defeats the purpose of a custom rifle. I would choose an upper-end production rifle... if you are passing it down to kids/grandkids, you might want to reign back your big bore aspirations... it is unlikely they will enjoy the thump quite as much as you do.

Once you go Blaser you do not really want anything else as it is all inferior.

K95 is great for still hunting because it is very light but barrels are very expensive and it kicks hard because of the light weight. Also single shot rifles are not for everyone. I love them !

R8 is the best all around pick. Awesome everything and infinite caliber options...

I'd go for the R8 , if you mostly still / mountain hunt then K95. I have both and both are exquisite rifles :)

If you are spending 6k on a rifle do you want a double you never use or a hunting rifle for closer to home?

From your list I’d say r8 or k95. Epps has a nice R93 30-06 for much less than 6k. Also a k95 jaeger for just over 6k in 7x65r, I wouldn’t say no to that as an all rounder personally

If you don’t like Mausers does that apply to derivatives? Kimber is on the list so I guess not. Some good deals on Kimber classics out there.

6 k is a lot of cash to turn a factory rifle into your dream gun, or buy a high end bolt gun. Guys in these threads will always find a way to suggest something more expensive though :dancingbanana:

this, check ellwood epps used blaser stuff !

I would go with that one too! It would be great for bisons and moose up here!

I had a Blaser. Sold it. I have yet to see another Blaser that I want to own.

So I went with the more practical discion.
I bought a Christensen Arms Ridgeline FFT in 7mm mag.
Though I thought long and hard about the Blaser double rifle, I knew I would just not use it that much.
This rifle will see the saddle scabbard, and use in snow and rain, so it will get used hard.
Ordered from Omer at Precision Optics(great guy to deal with)
Showed up last night, boy is it light and feels fantastic, this weekend I will do some loads up and give her a try.
Put a Ziess V4 6-24x50 on her, going to load some Berger 168gr with IMR7828SSC as I have a ton of it, and give it a go.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Ok I need some help here.
Long story short I have sold my mechanic tools to my current employer and now have some cash.
The tools took years to buy.
So now I have decided to spend some of the money on a special rifle
Something not just a common rifle, something I will keep for years and possibly pass down to my kids.
Budget $6000
Purpose is a hunting rifle but can be a long range rig I can run at the range as well.

Current prospects
Christensen Arms Ridgeline fft titanium
Cadex
Blaser R8
Blaser K95
Blaser s2 i have found one used in 9.3x74r in my price range
Kimber super America?
Weatherby deluxe in a big caliber
Bighorn armory spike driver
Turnbull 1886
I like big bores so open to others

Don’t want a custom Remington or the like as i have plenty of them.
Flame suit on but not a huge fan of mausers so please don’t say get a custom mauser.

Thought?
Ideas?

I did this a few years ago. I waffled back and forth between a Merkel K3 or a Blaser K96 both in 7x65R. I ended up going with an R8 with a 9.3x62 barrel and 7x64 barrel. So far I'm NOT disappointed. .I've yet to harvest an animal with it but have carried it plenty and shot it often and every time I remark to myself how impressive a machine it is to me anyway. I've only once regretted the purchase when I caught a fleeting glimpse of a K96 in 7x57R left hand.

Of what is on your list I'm partial to any of the Blaser offerings or The Turnbull. But I would take a hard look at Merkel offerings. An acquaintance of mine has a Krieghoff Hubertus that he seems to like, I would say no to one of those either.

Good choice. Looking forward to a range report.

I've been interested in one of these. The posted weight is 4.8 pounds for a short action standard bolt face. Any idea on weight for the short action and long action magnums? I can't seem to find it posted anywhere.
