A "very clean" No5

Let's not be too harsh here folks. Not everyone is a milsurp expert. Ask before you leap might be the moral of this story.
When I was a young forest ranger in Bancroft about 50 yrs ago one of our older staff took a hack saw to his nice old Octagon 26 inch barrel Marlin and shortened it to 20 inches. Then got a hand saw and cut off the crescent butt plate to add a rubber one. Made it a much better "deer" rifle! Kind of the same story only 50 yrs later.

There is not being milsurp expert, and then there is knowing scratching all the paint off of any rifle is a bad idea

Well let's see 50 years of progress then. Discouraging this destructive practice helps to retain the true value of a sought after milsurp carbine. Plus the seller would not have to face the ridicule of the international internet.
Your Winchester friend of long ago ducks out on this last important factor.

couldn't ya just restore it with some bedliner? Dab at it to get that suncorite look, yeh thats the ticket

At 200-250$ i’d take it and put black duracoat on it and call it a day. I’d make a great shooter, but unfortunatly, a collector no more.

Glad that I missed it.

Suncorite can be redone. The paint is still made in the UK and is used for industrial applications. I know of one chap in the USA who offers the painting service for rifles.

Beside the complications of getting the rifle to and from him across the Canadian border, it aint cheap. The service includes grit blasting, phosphating and then painting and baking. Comes out like it did from the factory. Cost is around $400Cdn plus the shipping.
