A weird 9mm depriming issue

My Hornady LnL started misbehaving over the last couple of reloading sessions. About 30% of the time, the decapping stem fails to push the spent primer out. The spent primer stays in the flash hole, just barely holding onto the case. Sometimes I can make it loose by jiggling the shellplate - other times I have to remove the shellplate. When stuck, the shellplate won't index. This slows me down tremendously.

When removed, the spent primer has a visible dent where the stem was pushing into it. The jam happens mostly with CCI primers, but occasional Winchester ones give me trouble, too. I moved the stem down as much as possible, way more than the recommended 1/8" but still no dice.

Any help is appreciated. TIA.
 
Most likely the primers are crimped - you need more reach for the depriming punch. I suppose it could also be the punch slipping (if you have lee dies and the collet is not tight enough).

Clear pictures would help.

If it is crimping, you will see a ring around the primer, as shown here:

My Dillon does this sometimes. (Not any more) Dillon recommended that I try rounding off the tip of the decapping pin. What is probably happening is the pin pushes the primer out, but the primer sticks on the tip of the pin and gets pulled right back into the primer pocket.

Pin can do this if it is flat, with squared edges, like a paper punch - it will get wedged into the anvil of the primer. Or if it is "pointy" it might pierce teh primer and hang onto it.

Round the edges of the pin ever so slightly and you should be good.
 
The odds are the primers are sticking to the primer punch tip and being drawn partly back into the pocket.

Check the punch and put a slight bevel on the tip if needed.

Dillon trys to deal with this by using a spring loaded primer punch, so once it clears the primer it snaps down a bit and throws it off.
 
I agree with trout bum and Canuck223 . . . same thing has happened to me with certain primers, they were getting stuck on the pin. I would also suggest putting a slight bevel on the end of the pin.

Are you saying that the tip may have the primer stuck to it, AND bring it back up into the case when I lower the handle? Because the shellplate jams when the ramp is almost at the bottom, i.e. no longer in contact with the die.

Looks like all issues are caused when depriming my own reloads. So it can't be the crimped primer issue, right? Unless my LnL has a feature I don't know of. ;)

The leftmost is Winchester primer, the other two are CCI.
 
When it happens on the 1050, it get's fun quick.

If you are lucky, you catch it on the next station when all of a sudden the swager is meeting a metric ton of resistance due to the obstructed primer pocket.

If you are unlucky, you fail to notice that at the same time you are futzing with the case in the swager station, you haven't seated the case at the primer station.

In that case, a few pulls of the handle later, you are wondering why you now have powder dribbling on the shellplate. Then you hope the bullet tray isn't really full 'cuz you have one without a primer.

And that is why I am not 'fully motorized' like some people. :p

Gives me a chance to stop and ask those in the know: where did I screw up?
