AAAGHHH -Blew it on 5 wolves.....REDEMPTION

back to the original post - back out to the bait site this morning but no joy. they were there sometime after the snowfall late last night and when we got there first thing this am based on the fresh tracks in the snow. They had dug down into the ice and chewed on some of the bones that have frozen into the ice.

Went to another site where I shot mine last year. Ravens and crows going nuts with the rabbit calls - kept calling and watching - nothing. Gunner410 and I did this for about 45 minutes and walked back to the road. As we got to the truck, a snowplow went by us. We hopped in and drove out - the snowplow was waiting for us at the junction with the highway. The driver told us that just after he passed us and went over the crest of the hill, there was a black wolf standing in the middle of the road - it was crossing over to the side we had been calling from...

Some days you just cant win....:p

Was the plow driver SURE it was a wolf? Might have been a large skunk with no stripes, or maybe a mutant squirrel or something...:stirthepot2:

I'd just like to interject here for a second ansd point out that I would give my eye teeth to be able to hunt any wolves bigger than the 120 lb'rs we get up north here... Which I have had to pay a fortune to go for... You guys are very fortunate....

That's the range these guys are in, 120lbs is a big dog. Bigger occur here too, but anything 140 and up would raise eyebrows. Official record is 175lbs from eastern Alaska for North America, I have no doubt this has been surpassed a few (very, very rare) times, not a lot of people weigh wolves.

Now, we ontario fellas may be prima-donnas by your standards but one that I shot (120 lbs) at a northern outfitter caused folks to come out of the lodge and created quite a stir when hung up... It was "one of the bigger ones" they had ever seen... And many wolves go through there each year...

A couple more wolves from Northern Alberta, from a member here's line. Timberwolves just like any other animal have size differences across their range, just like NE BC and NW Alberta produce big Moose they do the same with Wolves. There were three more big Wolves at my feet, and unfortunately my camera timer skills are limited and I missed the black guy's head.

This is why I get confused when Wolves from East of Alberta are posted- they don't quite look the same as what are referred to as "Wolves" here.

I call bu!!$h!t ,those are not wolves, they are friggin bears in wolves clothing !! ;0) Man they are big!

Back out this AM - Gunner410 went out last night so he wasnt getting up early today. No joy at the bait site although two walked out to where the truck was parked sometime last night. Drove to where the snowplow operator saw the wolf.

Fresh snow covered our tracks from yesterday and two large fresh wolf tracks on top of ours. This seems to be common, they are not concerned by our scent, one of these ones walked right into where we had sat. This has happened many times at the bait site as well.

Anyways, called for about 10 minutes with the rabbit call - crows and ravens started coming in. Saw some movement in the trees and a kit lynx comes out at at a fast trot right at me across the hydro line. I sat still and it came within 18 feet of me and then went into the bush behind me. If it had been bigger I may have been concerned but it was pretty small (slightly bigger than our fish Doug! :D )

All in all, another neat day

d:h:Well - another one of those days...

Went out with an 18 year son of one of my buddies who wanted to try predator hunting. We saw one running down the road after one of our sets yesterday AM.

This AM, drove out to the bait site - no activity. Pull out my favorite Primos jack rabbit call - do one series and the reeds go flying into the snow. The laminate bell had split and the call was toast. Nothing shows its face.

Driving back to town, we get flagged down by a snowplow operator who tells me about a road killed moose and did I want it. Run into town grab gear and gas and head out. Get there just as a commercial hunting operator is winching it into his trailer for bait..

Back to town - drive out to where we saw the one yesterday on the road and where I called the lynx out last weekend. Call for 20 minutes and out walks a wolf onto the hydro line - but to our left side with a road and snowmobile trail immediately behind it... We looked at it through the scopes, but couldnt shoot because there wasnt a safe backstop :bangHead:

He just sauntered across the hydro line without a care in the world and into the treeline on our side and we never saw him again.

I didnt bother buying a lottery ticket either on the way home

Chas, great topic! I absolutely love it!!! I bought myself a 22-250 Dec 18th/2011 and been out 98% of the time. Just reading your stories makes a guy feel like we are there with you.
I knew exactly what you mean`t when you talked about calling. When calling, it is very hard to know "when" to pack it in and leave. Sometimes you sit for 15-30 minutes and see nothing, but as soon as you leave...is when you see them. It gets aggravating at the best of times. Keep up the thread!!!!

I have some wolf pics ,alfa male and female shot near athabasca.I have a cat pic ,shot near my place .Don't know how to post pictures though.

Been on the road for a week so havent been out hunting at all. Finally got to look at my trail cam pictures from last when I pulled my camera before I left - there were two on the bait over the Saturday night and this one on Sunday morning. Of course that was the morning I didnt get up and go hunting!
