Here's a question for you guys that have shot lots of coyotes and save the fur. This last season I shot lots of coyotes (with my 22-250) using Berger HP's. They worked pretty good. They usually didn't leave a big hole when/if they exited. But I'm wondering if I changed to soft point bullets, what kind of results can I expect? What kind of exit holes do they usually leave? Do the coyotes usually drop on they spot or do they usually run a bit? I guess would you consider them more fur friendly in your experience than other bullets?

In .22-.250 or .220 Swift.........45 grain Varmint HP bullets from Wildcat Bullets in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Little hole going in..........no exit hole, and the coyotes drop instantly.

In my .222 Remington I use the 40 grain version.

I like heavy for caliber bullets for coyotes... I have seen many run away after being hit with light jacketed bullets at long range.
Accubonds or other bonded and controlled expansion bullets don't leave big holes like a blow through with a B/T or H/P will sometimes do at close range.
I also use a .25wssm and a .270wsm as my two most used varmint rifles.

I use Nosler 55 gr. BT in my 223 @ 3240 fps

they exit on both coyotes and the wolf I shot this winter with my 223

twoonie size exits, and rapid death

Three years ago I field tested the Wildcat Varmit Extreme 45 gr open hollow points (out of a 22-250) It is the only coyote bullet I load anymore. Very, very seldom do I have a exit hole, not something I can say about a large variety of .22 cal. bullets that I have loaded in the past.

I've used 100 grn softpoints in my 243 and had very small exits.

i've shot exactly one coyote with a federal 100 gr softpoint and it made a fist sized hole.

I know that my brother has shot dozen's of coyotes with factory softpoints out of his 6mm Remington and he has lot's of problems with large exit holes. He asked me what to use because he found even a 22-250 to be too explosive.

I told him I wasn't sure but maybe try solid points or consider getting a .223.

I'm not trying to BS anybody, just my experience. I will take pics next time.

Well a fist sized hole is not conducive to selling fur. You can stitch a one inch hole or even a two inch hole closed if the hide is still there.
My experience with light rapid expansion bullets @ high velocity is such that at close range they blow big holes and at long range they don't penetrate well.
I have had much better results with hunting wieght/construction bullets over a broader spectrum of ranges and velocities.

We all (6) use a 243 with the heavier bullets like Serria 85 BTHP and Hornady 87gr BTHP. Almost no pelt damage. One uses soft points and you have to use a roll of yarn to sew up the hole. There are lots of farms and houses in our area and the HP does not ricochet like the soft points.

im sure ill get the torch,
i prefer the 17hmr, at 100 yards and under or in tight surroundings when precise placement is needed. i hunt right in the corrals with cattle. drops them instantly, all with body shots.
usually my wby257 gets the nod, in case a wolfy popps up

I shot a lot of coyotes with 55gr hornady sp the cheap ones they leave a good size exit hole close up they usually dont exit cause the speed is to high and the bullet explodes when this happens often it will debowel the animal I think amax taget bullets would probably go through it and leave a small hole I guess these bullets have a thicker jacket.

heres a 55 gr. Nosler BT exit @ 250 yards on a yote (out of a 223 - 3240 fps muzzle)

Holes like that are the reason I turn away from ballistic tip bullets. That coyotes fur is now basically useless. I wanted to know peoples results with soft point bullets and how it treated the fur so I wouldn't end up with a hole like that. I think I'll stay with the Berger's , thanks for everyone's replies.

Damn that is a big hole... gotta like that .260.:)
Bergers will do the same thing at close range... I have seen it with Uncle Argyles PPC. I have seen some runaways at long range with Bergers as well.
