? About Bullets & Coyote Fur

I took 26 this season just with the 52 gr Berger from 40 yards to 362 paces. I only had one bad hole and that was on on a coyote that was running straight away from me. The bullet basically entered above his hips and opened him up all the way to his neck - it followed his spine.. The rest of the hides had twoonie size holes (very easily sewed). They were all shot at different angles and distances. I never did have a run away, but that was just my experience - everyone's is different. I also don't run them extremely fast. I just wanted to know if softpoints would be better.

Actually I have one being built by Ted Gaillard right now. I'll probably use it in the early season and the 22-250 later when they start hanging up.

That is a great season Yoteboy... I am curious how fast you are pushing the 52 grain Bergers.
What were the average weights of the coyotes you are thumping in SK.
We get a lot of big dogs (50+lbs) in S Ont and they are tough to kill.

I never chronographed them but If I went to the speed according to the book it would be between 3500-3600.
The avg. weights would be probably mid 30's I'd guess. Here's a big one from last season.

I like this picture. My buddies lifted this thing about 4 times and his arms are getting tired, his face is red and if you look - his kid is laughing at him because he's struggling.:D

Well if you like coyote pictures, here's one from a couple of years ago when I was buying lots. Let's just say I spent alot of time in my fur shed that season.

Yoteboy, who did you sell your furs to when you used to buy them? There seems to be constant disagreement about where you will make top dollar. I sell mine at NAFA. Others say you do better to sell to buyers with private contracts ie. Slutkers or Beasley. Assuming the yotes are pelted (fleshed, stretched etc.) where do you think is best to sell?

The "who do you sell to?" question is always a hot topic. We tried to sell to Wi*bke Furs out of Eitzen , Mn. And basically got screwed out of about $1800. We then tried the auction and had to wait a year and a half for all of them to sell. The best plan I came up with is to know your grades, then sell your lower grades to a private guy and ship your better stuff to NAFA. This has worked for me. The good stuff will always sell well at the auction and the lower stuff sold to private guys will put money in your pocket right away to go after more. Then hopefully you should end up with a good avg. when all is said and done.

a fine red mist

I use a 218Kbee anything I tapped with an expanding bullet expanded. Use remington 52gr fmj over a healthy dose of Lil gun and drops coyotes, wolves and foxes with next to no dammage. As I do this for a living I do not have time to be sewing holes good hunting.

yote boys pile

Great picture but I got ask you how do you handle all that green belly and what is your technique to thaw out a pup. your right good furs went to NAFA lower grade went to the fur buyer

Actually we didn't have that many green bellies. We had bought stuff the season earlier , just not as many, and we got most of the guys to hang the coyotes by the back feet to cool off and freeze and that pretty much took care of the majority. The odd ones we just dealt with them as best we could.

The thawing was done by my partner in his shed ( in the background of the picture). He slowly thawed them in the shed with a slow burning fire hanging by the stove over a couple of days.

That season we actually sent them to Fur Harvesters. They offered us a break on the % they would take off due to the big number we had. But they took to long to sell. Now I'd only go with NAFA. It seems they usually don't have too many holdovers from season to season.

I was thinking of trying some coyote hunting. I've got a Ruger M77 in 6mm rem. Do you guys think that would work OK? I wouldn't want to buy a whole new rifle for something I've never even tried. Any particular rounds (manufacturer/weight) you would suggest?

6mm

6 mm will do the ticket in a heart beat. I am moving into a 6.5x55 85gr hollow point put a dab of epoxy in it and you got a fmj. If your in it for the money take the head shot if it presents its self. Keep your stick on the ice

6mm would work well, nice and fast for them long shots

Federal makes an 80 gr. soft point load at a high speed of 3470 fps :)
