About Colt Single Action Grips

Well I managed to get back from a month in North Carolina and my grips arrived while I was away. They indeed do look like the original except they are plastic while the original are rubber. Was a little disappointed in that but I can live with it. I did some initial fitting and they are now on the gun. Now I have to begin thinning them to conform to the grip better as they are too thick at the moment. Was thinking of a belt sander or palm sander but might be better off with just sandpaper nailed flat on a board then rubbing the grips on it to thin them out to get a flatter surface contact with the frame. Thoughts?

Oof. Whatever you do Moe, do it off the gun. If it were mine, i would use the sandpaper block, abrasive up on a table and rub the backside of the grip, the part that sits against the steel, across the sand paper very sparingly.

Understand what is done to one panel, should be done to the other.

Good luck.

Thanks, that was what I was thinking but you explained it better than I could.

There will be only so much material that can be removed from the backsides until the grip actually begins to shrink due to cutting into the radius. Go slow, check often.

Done and I am pleased with my work. Not perfect but the imperfections are so slight that only I would notice. Spent about 4 hours and checked every few passes on the paper or file.

Thanks everyone for your help and encouragement.
