'Absolutely terrified': Northern B.C. family fights off 2 marauding grizzly bears

No Guns? No Problem.

Just have them post the "1-800" number for PETA beside the phone. I'm sure they would come right out and convince those innocent "teddy bears" that trying to eat the family was the wrong thing to do...

An experience I'm sure that won't be forgotten any time soon , every once in a while we get a reminder when in bear country ...., I don't think this incident makes anyone a knob ... As I'm sure it won't happen again to this fellow . Many of us become a bit complacent when we live in grizz country and are somewhat use to bears... But glad no one got mauled .....
There should be a incredibly stiff fine for those who feed bears... As this story makes me think these bears are quite use to people and perhaps there was someone in the area with food or attractant drawing they around people

If I read into this story, seeing that he had to store his firearms at his dad's place instead of his own home, one would think the GF was opposed to guns in the home?

Or maybe he has a criminal record and can not legally own firearms, therefore he is doing the legal thing and is now relying on family.

I would agree . It appears that these bears were very use to being around humans , and getting food . With horns blowing , dogs barking , and warning shots going off ; and the bears still sticking around does make them seem to be somewhat tame around humans . I suspect someone in the area has been feeding these animals......

I think those Bears are no longer use to humans.
Its more in the past tense now :)
Humans will be humans and regardless of rules and regulations and laws they will always break one two or all three.
There is more to these two bears than we will likely ever know...unless we of course live in or near Atlin BC.

totally agree on all.

they had to kill a sow and 2 cubs not that long ago in Atlin for the same reason: fed bears. up to the time big fines are given nothing will change.

Sounds like the guy needs to buy at least one rifle that he can leave at home for emergencies.....having a rifle at his fathers house is not much use . As the old saying goes ; it is better to have it , and not need it ; than need it , and not have it . :sniper:
Ditto. Remember the days when farmers had a shotgun by the door.

Here,in Ontario,we have enough Black Bears breaking into garden sheds, cottages and cabins, too. Even in the GTA,Police have had to shoot a few in people's back yards because there's no OMNRF staff on call from budget restrictions. I'm glad we don't have Grizzly's to deal with. Belligerent Blackies are a enough of a PITA.

. . . "Eventually, the animals got into a bag of garbage that Cowan had put just outside his front door a little earlier"

A fed bear is a dead bear. We've had bears killed here under similar circumstances; responsible garbage management is a necessity in bear country. Why would you be surprised that bears came to the bait?

Some people never buy that argument and it's killed a lot of animals, not just bears. got a problem in Sundre with aggressive deer, same story.

Grizz

Im finding it hard to believe someone living in this area did not have a rifle in the house. Either hes not to bright or as you guys mentioned there are other reasons he did not have one in the house.
