I reported that as a typo to CBC. This is what I got back:

Hello Ben,

Thanks for the note. In this case "silver-backed" is a direct quote and used as an adjective to describe the grizzly bear.

I understand that "silvertip bear" is another term for grizzly, but I don't believe the man in the story meant to say "silvertip bear."

Im finding it hard to believe someone living in this area did not have a rifle in the house. Either hes not to bright or as you guys mentioned there are other reasons he did not have one in the house.

Unfortunately if you read much about Atlin residents, this superbly beautiful area was/is highly infested with hippy through backs & artists to the nth degree.

I am guessing the absence of any kind of adequate firearm, in this household, was very purposeful indeed. Darwin almost had them!

Atlin is closer to Juneau, Alaska than many other reasonably populated areas of North-Western BC.

Read the article on CBC page this morning and pretty aggressive behaviour on the part of those two bears. Good thing Dad showed up with the proper hardware and the know how to go with it. No one was hurt but pretty close. The antis were fairly quiet in the comment section under the article but it was still early.

And they were looking to turn their lives around. Just after this next robbery...

1 in the barn, 1 in the detached garage, 1 in the outhouse.... when you live in the country you ARE allowed this under SOR98. Firearms CANNOT be loaded, but they can have ammunition in close proximity.

On a serious note, does anyone else find it funny how unbiased the media handles these scenarios when they come up? Rampaging wild animals aggressively coming at people going about their day to day lives, people do what they can to avoid confrontation but ultimately had to use a firearm to shoot and kill the wild aggressive animal. No sensationalism, no anti-gun lunacy etc
Why can't the media and legal system go the same in this country when it's a rampaging, wild, aggressive human trying to break in your door or invading your home?
