ACOG vs. ELCAN vs. AIMPOINT

I like the ACOG because it has a bullet drop compensated reticle inside, pre-calibrated for 62gr .223 or 5.56mm. It is tuff as nails, lightweight, self luminous for 13 years etc..

Elcan I'll pass.

Aimpoint is a good CQB style optic also.

Own an Aimpoint... quick target acquisition (2 Moa dot is small enough to hit targets farther away with the M14.. for me at least)

If I had an AR, I would like to try an ACOG, but Ive only looked through one once, it was very very clear...

Never seen an Elcan...

Which do you have, which would you buy if you could, and why?

ACOG - made in the USA.
Elcan - made in Canada.
AimPoint - made in Europe.

Things to consider:
1. Warranty service: considering the USA lock-down on ITAR exports, this may sway your decision, only if you are buying items that are not DOS approved for export or 'grey-market'.
2. After warranty service: see #1 and is there a dealer network in Canada to support this potential future need?
3. What is your use and purpose?
4. What firearm are you putting this scope/optic?

I see this is an oldish thread but...I have an ACOG TA01 and was originally looking for an Elcan Spectre DR. I'm glad I didn't find one when I wanted because I just recently handled the Elcan and found I couldn't see through it properly until my eye was quite close to it. I can just see "scoping" myself!! I have no such problem with the ACOG and it was quite a bit cheaper (and the beauty of no batteries is a plus). I can't comment on the Aimpoint as I don't own one (but I do have a cheap knockoff on my DA shotty).

I have an ACOG with a Burris Fast Fire II that is piggy backing it. I also have an Aimpoint with an 3x Aimpoint FTS all sitting on LaRue QD's. Personaly my favorite is the piggy back ACOG set-up, as the fast fire is for the 25 meter range and the ACOG BDC reticale takes over for the rest. Now when I do 3 gun stuff the Aimpoint rock's out, hands down way better for close range only in my mind. Now Elcan is supposed to both thing's but as of yet I have yet to own this scope to provide any feed back. Although on my door crasher M14 that is in the work's the 2.5-6 times zoom in 7.62 is defenatly appealing to me.

i use an aimpoint now on my ar15. its pretty good, fast, real fast and accurate. I can usually hit the gong at 200 yards with it, which i think is 12"x12" I would imagine the ACOG being the best, but for the price and trouble at the border... I had one on order for a long time after 2 months i canceled my order said f-it, got tired of waiting. before that i was running irons. which was ok, not great. Elcan i wasn't too impressed with really when i got to use it.

JaysonCraig next time your going to the range PM me and we will try to see witch one works better and I'll post a range report for everyone else to deiced the pro's and cons between to two. What do ya say?

I have an ACOG TA13F with chevron reticle (4x) on my Swiss Arms Classic Green and it works well.

I have an Aimpoint Micro H1 on my SAN CQB (just bought it last month) and am getting used to it, so far so good.

Never tried an Elcan. A lot of the people I shoot with use Eotech, Acogs or Aimpoints... with a few S+B short dots.

I like how all the BC boys have come out to chip in...time for all to go up to Poco and show off the 'wares (hopefully it won't be snowing like last Saturday).

I have an ACOG TA01NSN on my Classic Green Carbine.

The gradiated reticle has 100m stadia lines out to 600m and they are calibrated to match the average shoulder width at the relevant range, kind of a quick and dirty range finder. The stadia are illuminated by tritium for the 100-400m stadia.

The sight is clear and very good at pulling in the light. When it is low light, the tritium illuminaton only gives you enough light on the reticle to highlight it on the silhouette of the target and prevents washing out the target with too much light. The design is well thoguht out and from everything I have seen, this is a very function over form piece of kit.

I used it this summer on a carbine course and did very well on the DOS course of fire. The TA01NSN is a very well thought out telescopic sight and when used right, can be used to engage targets as close as 5m, but at that range I'll go to the CQB blades on top.

aimpoint compM4 for cqb out to 100M wouldn't consider anything else. super fast target acquisition and bullet proof. 80,000 hour battery life is impressive too.

I like the ACOG because it has a bullet drop compensated reticle inside, pre-calibrated for 62gr .223 or 5.56mm. It is tuff as nails, lightweight, self luminous for 13 years etc..

I also use an ACOG and this basically covers it.

I own an ACOG TAO1 with the BDC and think it's great!!! A friend of mine owns and Aimpoint and while I like it a lot I like the ACOG better because it's a 4x with the BDC so I can use it at longer range.

My C7A2 has the upgraded Elcan A2 version on it. We zero'ed our rifle on the outdoor 100 M range here in Kandahar and it was right on target and maintained zero with a lot of banging, and crawling through the rocky and talcum like powder they call sand here. It is impossible to keep your weapon clean here. Functional yes...clean, no.

I have never had any problems with the Elcan despite all the negitive comments it seems to get on here. If you are competent, take care of it, and know how to use it, it is very effective. 1 MOA, if you know what you're doing, and take your time. Don't be afraid to buy one. (A2 Version of course)

We all know that CGN'ers must have the absolute latest in Military optics on their rifles, so they can take them to the civie range, look totally cool and MIL-SPEC, shoot a few rounds to make sure it's zero'd for zombie day, and take it back to their lockup to sit for the next time they get deployed to the target range.

here in Afghanistan, your personal weapons are beat to hell, optics banged like no tomorrow, and most everyone's weapons are customized to some degree, with accessories bought online! I even saw a CF guy with a hand braided sling. What ever works.

The Marines here are using the M16A2 with the RAS system and a ACOG. I asked then what they thought of thir optics, and they are also very happy with them. They also use versions of out Elcan on some of their other weapons here.

Well, since this thread has been bumped, I'll throw in my $.02.

I've owned Aimpoints and I currently have an ACOG. I've also used several Elcan C79 sights. With the newer A2 version with the Gen4 base, I've heard that lost of the "issues" with them have been resolved. With the Specter DR's, I've talked to CF guys who have used them on their C7's over in Afghanistan, and they thought they were great. They're all well built mil-spec optics that will take more abuse than it will ever see at the range. If you're doing Service Rifle stuff, definitely go for the ACOG or Elcan. For close in shooting, the Aimpoint is great for fast target acquisition, but it isn't as precise as a magnified optic, especially at longer ranges. So it really depends on what you're looking to do with it...

I have used all three at one point or another. (only standard CF Elcan) If I had my choice of the three I would go ACOG, no batteries well build, good mount. The Aimpoint would be next, pretty much indestructable and dosnt take up a pile of room on the rifle.

The Elcan will work OK, better for longer range, crappy for CQB, not very good with NVG, no back up Irons, mounts tend to be of lesser quality then the other two I have seen them fall right off the rifle after a day of use, unless they have done an upgrade on this I wouldnt even consider Elcan. This is why almost everyone who can tries to get Eotechs over seas. which is my first choice with back up irons.

I have never used the Spectre DR so it may be better as it goes to 1X magnification and has a few other features that seem better; and the mount looks different.
