is there a place you could buy an action only like a rem 700 win 70 or a sako
or do you just buy the gun for the action
also what would it take to make one of the above actions into a diffrent cal than what it was made for

I want to build a 300 ultra that is super light (5-5.5lbs) and wicked accurate
so i can hike all day and shoot a sheep across the valley on the next mountian
and if i cant get the weight im looking for ill probably go with the 300wsm

   :D

trust me...you don't want a 5.5# 300 Ultra Mag....:)

just buy a Rem 700 Ti in 300SAUM....;)

those sheep on the next mountain will never know what hit 'em

Agreed. You only think you want a 5.5# RUM. It's not practical, seriously. Too light for the recoil impulse. Also, that round is WAY overkill for sheep unless your ego is equally as large...

I prefer the 7mm as the ballistics are much better in the 160gr range. You should have no problem getting a 7WSM or RSAUM into that type of rifle weight. Should have no problem with a 7 Mystic.

As to being super accurate, that will depend alot on how lucky you are with your barrel. I would expect 1/2 MOA which is more then enough out to 700yds (far enough?).

however, expect the scope to add a bit to the overal weight. No use having a scope you can't adjust for distance and conditions.

Let us know what you come up with. You could always swiss cheese a Rem 7 or 700 and drop into a 15oz stock. Sporter barrels that are fluted will also drop weight down substantially.

Claven, ranges can be very long sheep hunting, and once you get a sheep you have to keep the Grizzlies from taking it from you.

corlanes sporting goods in dawson creek BC has montana actions in stock and ready to ship....

also bitsandpieces on the board advertises that he also has some in stock and ready to ship.

Buckbrush, how about a nice LR zapper and a very compact big bore stopper. How far are you planning to go?

I really doubt you will be able to take shots much over 700yds due in large part to the winds that are usually present. A 7RM or my 7 Mystic with 162gr Amax will do all you want at that range and then some.

I have done some penetration tests with heavy 30cal bullets at RUM velocities. I am not impressed as a stopping slug. There is just too high a chance of bullet breaking up.

Unless, you want to use two bullets. One for the ram and the other for boo boo.

Personally, from my tests, I would be much happier with my 45LC trapper then a RUM when facing a hungry bruin.

Then of course there is the big bore wheelgun option but...

Don't discount the oldie 270 as a reasonable choice for mid-long range sheep hunting (or the 270 wizzum or wby if you need a magnum)

I have a 7mm and a 270 wsm I want bigger for some long distance (across the mountain) shots
I also pack in to my hunting spot for 2days in and 2 days out
as for weight vs recoil im pretty sure i can handle a couple shots a year with it
Im small but far from a pussy
I only want this gun for long hiking hunting trips not just shooting so the recoil wont be a problem (i already shoot a few big guns)

So then what are you doing asking our opinions? Go do it! It sounds like a super cool project (maybe not the most practical IMHO, but it's YOUR gun, and still cool)

And post pics when you're done :D :D

Im asking where is the best place to buy an action or should i just buy the gun for the action
that is what im wanting an opinion on
Daniel

It would be less hassle, and possibly cheaper to just get an entry-leve gun with the action you want, and part out the pieces you don't need. Get a Remington 700 SPS, and sell the barrel and stock, and maybe the trigger assembly too if you decide to upgrade. Ditto for a Stevens 200, and you get a Savage 10/110 action.

Or check with the gunsmiths for customer actions - Bits of pieces has some, as stated above. Prices will be a lot higher, and when you factor in the price you'd get for the take-off parts, it's higher still. But you do get a custom piece for your money
