Adding a choke to cylinder bore barrel

I was fairly disappointed when I patterned 00 buck from my 18" cylinder bore 870 at the range. Not bad at 40 yards with 6 of 8 pellets hitting a 4' x 2' paper sheet, but down to 2 or 3 hits at 50 yards. :( So my question is, has anyone had a choke put on their cylinder bore barrel? How much did it cost? Was it worth the cost for the improvement in shot pattern?

Where are you from, I had a full choke bbl, chopped and threaded for a Mod, Just over $100.

Problem is 00 Buck, it just doesn't pattern well. An IC or Mod choke might help but any tighter and your pattern will get worse. I don't think 00 buck was intended for more than 40 yds. The local coyote hunters use 4 buck up to about 75 -80 yds.

A cop friend of mine used some SSG on a guy at 15 yds or so... everyone was impressed at how he just "hit him in the leg with one pellet" ...fact is when a cop makes the decision to pull the trigger he has made the decision to kill. This particular officer is also an avid shotgunner, so it wasn't a lack of training.

Try different loads and brands. Look for buffered loads as well. Stay away from the high velocity or magnum load stuff.

Remember that 'tactical' shotguns are meant for very close range. They weren't meant to put buckshot into a tight group at 50 yards.

So it is possible then? I have a 1937 Ithaca 37 that was chopped back by the previous owner to 18.5 inches. I don't want to get a new barrel as it is a number matching original (except for the chop), so I would like to get replaceable choke done on it. It is cylinder right now...

Bill C68, I guess if anyone wants to take down bucks they better get in close or use a slug. I thought SSG was buck4? I would imagine by the time a cop has to open fire panic can play a big role on aim.

Grouse Man, yeah I have plans to try Federal's "flitecontrol wad" shells. I was using Remington's "managed-recoil" rounds. Box doesn't say if it is buffered, but there is some residual white plastic looking powder around the crimp area of the shells. The intent of this gun wasn't 'tactical' :) in nature, more of a home defense/camp gun. I'll have to do more testing to find it's maximum effective range.

Still wondering if anyone has patterned their cylinder bore gun, then patterned it again after installing a choke. I would be interested to see how much improvement was gained in the pattern.

My question is - "Why are you using BS at 50yds"? It wasn't meant for that range. You're lucky to get pellets on target.

Repete,

I wasn't actually using 00 buck at 50 yards, I was testing the patterning at various ranges including 50 yards. I've read about successful use of 00 buck at 50 yards. Since I don't believe everything I read, I decided to do my own testing (see my second post above). ;)

With the size of shot that 00 buck is any choke (restriction) will probably ruin your pattern.........the more open the better...... a good pattern at 40 yds is due to your cyl. bore!! You can try buffered loads if your not already using them. It's good to see guys like yourself actually putting the shooting on paper......seeing is believing!!

:shotgun:I recently had an over/under Baikal 12 gauge cut down from 28 to 22 inches, the pattern actually improved when shooting 0 buck.(same as ssg)
It points better and I like the looks of the shorter o/u.

Your results are quite typical regardless of choke. If you get the pattern you describe consistantly at 40 yds, I think you got what you can out of that gun&load. Buckshot is not normally much good beyond that, despite some stories you may hear.
