Advanced Carbine Course, Victoria Fish and Game, March 2-3

I sight all of my stuff at 100 regardless of the course or tasking. I have less to remember then.

If I were you and given your line of work, I'd sight in for my unit SOP or what you already know hold overs for.
The range we'll be on let's us get back to about 35 at most... unfortunately.

for my pre-class workup trg, what distance should I sight in my PRO for?

Just signed up, looking forward to a great weekend and some quality instruction!

I suppose this means were restricted to the pistol range then? Damn that is unfortunate, the rifle range would be much better :(

I agree 35 yds tops. More like 25yds under normal use. If you stand just outside the tire walls, and place target's half way UP the back stop, you can stretch it to 30-35yds. The pistol range is just not ideal conditions for a carbine course, but it's all we've got I guess, unless I have misunderstood something?

I'm already wondering what the weather will be like in early March up there on the Hat, some rain gear may be necessary me thinks ;)

Quality instruction? Is there someone coming to help me????:D

We'll try to work back as far as I can on some drills but you will find that I can do enough at closer ranges to give you some quality trigger time and good learning experiences.

Many of the US courses I've been on have been run at shorter ranges with some longer shots worked in. The problem with a ton of long stuff is the time it takes to move back, check targets, etc. unless you have good steel! I love shooting steel but, sadly, many ranges don't have enough for a full course if they even have any at all!

I have complete faith you'll make our little multi purpose range work :)

Can't wait.

Also, for anyone who cares, I'll be bringing my V-Tac 9hole Board for use during the course too. Earl said he could make use of it.

Steve sent me a PM regarding equipment so I thought I would send out a blanket message on here in case someone gets missed on our email.

You can find a list of required equipment on our website.

I have no issues with running a thigh rig on our courses and I usually run mine. For police and military folks I suggest that they wear what they would operationally wear including armour.

My only stipulation is "NO SERPAS!". Under stress some shooters will activate the release and slide their finger into the trigger guard!

Course timings will usually run from 08:30am to 4:30pm. It seems that with the amount of information that goes in, shooters start to degrade in performanace around 3:00 pm due to fatigue so I try to start slowing the day down around then. There is a ton of info to take in.

Hope that helps!

Earl

Just got the newest email apparently now we need more ammo.

I consider this a good thing, it means more shooting :) :) :)

Course now says:
- 500 rounds of reliable rifle ammunition
- 300 rounds of reliable pistol ammunition

It's a West-trooper from Germany. It was really cheap and super warm.. I bought 2 for $15.00 each but with a $40.00 brokerage fee. Found them on-line from some surplus shop over there.

Although to was cheap, I really like it, it has stood up well and it looks good.

Paid up, geared up, ready to go.

For the good of the course let's hope it stays relatively dry ;) We'll get more done in good weather anyway.

For me as long as it's not really windy, I'll be happy. That little range sucks hard in the wind, target's and target stands blowing all over the damn place. There are lots of tires to hold stuff down, but it can get pretty bad, for example the wind in Victoria today is gusting about 80+km/h, it would certainly make for an "interesting" day if it were blowing like that this weekend.

I assume this is a game on rain or shine kind of thing right? Like, we're not dependent upon weather I would hope?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best. I'll be bringing two sil-tarps for rain coverage (This range has very little shelter), and full rain gear, regardless of the forecast.

Hi guys,

The club opens at 8:30 am with shooting allowed to start at 9:00am. In you aren't a member of VFG, please wait at the entrance to the club (in the parking area beside the caretakers house) at 8:30am so you can follow us down to the range for a 9:00am start. There is a locked gate into the Multipurpose range so we need to let you in if you aren't already a member. We will be located on Bay 7.

Here is the address and directions to the club for the non-local participants:

700 Holker Place, Malahat BC, V9B 2V5

Directions to Victoria Fish Game

The club is located a short 20 minute drive north of Victoria. Travel north from Victoria on the Trans Canada Highway #1 to the top of Malahat Mountain. Turn right on to Holker Place, and go 100 meters to our property entrance. Holker Place is approximately 1 kilometer past Shawnigan Lake Road and is opposite the turnoff to Spectacle Lake Provincial Park.

The Multi Purpose range has a pota john for washroom facilities. You need to pack in your lunch and bring lots of water, etc. I also recommend bringing knee pads of some sort because of the terrain. We go rain or shine, so be prepared. Don't forget your sunscreen in case it is sunny. Some of the guys got wicked burns last time.

Also if anyone has any portable sun shades/shelters like the one below, please bring it just in case. I was at the range yesterday and one of the guys had one, it came in really handy when it got a little rainy.
