advantage of a long barrel for hunting ?

i have a smooth bore gun, this one i was thinking using a scope on for 50-100m, and did not want a super long barrel, since i do not need it for sights.

thanks guys, you are great.

Happy, since all shotshell powder is burned in 16" to 18" of tube, other than swing or weight balance, there is no advantage to having a barrel over 20". I prefer longer barrels for waterfowl or trap simply for the feel of the gun. With regards to slug accuracy, I have a Remington 1100 which I recently purchased a 21" smoothbore cantilever barrel for and topped it off with a cheapie Tasco Pronghorn 3-9 32mm scope, and used my IC choke tube. Tried it at the range with a couple of brands of rifled slugs the other day and I was totally impressed to say the least. Once I got her on target, I shot a 3 1/4" group at 100 yards with Remington 2 3/4" Sluggers! The worst group was about 5". I doubt if sabots can shoot much better then that, and I've even owned rifles that couldn't do that(I didn't own them for very long mind you:p). Didn't see much point in trying beyond 100 yards, since the velocity drop would make them ineffective.

what is the advantage of a long barrel on a shotgun for hunting, all of the hunting shotguns i see are 24" and up to 28" barrel, why ?

Balance, swing momentum, total weight, overall length, noise level, and muzzle velocity (up to a point) are affected by barrel length.

Pattern and accuracy are not.

I use an 870 youth express and its either 20" for barrel length. I have had nothing but success when hunting turkey, and upland game.

I shoot a Beretta 302 with Winchester super x slugs , from a 20" smooth bore slug barrel, out to 100 yards they are very accurate and hard hitting for deer.

I havent found using shorter barrel limits my ability for land clean kills.

what on earth is up with the barrel extensions that screw in like choke tubes?
ive seen ones that are 32" that screw into a threaded barrel, making your 30" barrel into 62", LOL!! :runaway:
WTF? why on earth would you want to do that? just to make it subsonic? why not just use lower power loads, lol.

MBP I believe you have it right the long extensions are to make them subsonic but they also reduce the muzzle blast from exiting gases - which would still be there if you shot a light load out of a conventional length barrel There was a thread on these here recently i beleive iot had to do with a discussion of the suppressor used in the movie"no country for old men"

wouldnt such an extension be a prohibited device in Canada, seeing as it has a similar function as a silencer?

i cant imagine swinging a 62" barreled shotgun, LOL. 30" barrels on anything other than hinge-actions are bad enough.
id also imagine that that extra length would add a lot of leverage, so god help your barrel/choke threads if it hit something or fell over with the extension on it :)

i want to see a picture of a guy holding a 62" barreled pump gun, LOL

No, because it is not a silencer, it is a choke tube.

i second that a longer barrel is faster on snap shots, first season i ever duck hunted i borrowed an old wing master with a 30" barrel and it was a breeze for snap shots, my little 21" barrel on my win 1300 took some getting used to and i found that iwas shooting high with it at first. both guns worked great, chokes make the biggest difference thats for sure!

I hate long barrels. I have a 37 with a 30" on it, and I want to get it chopped to 24".

I find it too heavy and LONG when operating in the blinds. Maybe my blinds aren't as cushy as others but its the spot that picks the blind, not comfort level!

My beater Maverick with the 18.5" barrel, I find points perfectly for me. Its up fast, and I can't imagine a better grouse gun!
