Advice for a Standard Division gun

Hi all,

I need advice for a good Standard Division IPSC gun. I know SVI is the way to go but the cost for that gun is way up there.

For that reason, I'm looking at 2 different pistols. 1st is a Tanfoglio Limited Custom 40 and the 2nd would be an STI Edge 40. Both have Heavy Barrels, Ambi Safeties, Double Stack and pretty much ready to go. I would trade out the original extractor from the STI and put in a Aftec. I did hear that the mags for the Tanfoglio break in the middle. I don't know if that's true or not.

I would like to know your opinions on these 2 and any others that you would recommend.

My vote would be Tanfoglio. The mags are cut in the middle but they are easy to fix if you get one that breaks and the guns handle so well that this small hassle is more than worth dealing with. And the on-going cost of shooting these guns is about half what anything else with a button rifled barrel is, since you can shoot cheap plated bullets ACURRATELY due to the polygonal rifling.

I totally agree with relliot 100%, PLUS 1 on Tanfoglio Limited Custom or the lighted Tanfo LC-II. With the price under 2K it comes complete with Mag Well, 6-mags with aluminum base pads, iron and fibre optic front sight, 2-extra recoil springs, tools with an attractive looking lockable case. Out of the box, you are ready to go for IPSC Standard for under 2K.

With the Tanfoglio you can also shoot lead out of those poly barrels as well. I have over 2K of lead bullets through my Model "L" in .40cal and have yet to experience any leading in the barrel. Great guns.

Absolutely. Leading is very minimal or non-existant, since there are no sharp corners in the rifling to build up in.

And once you use the pivoting trigger for a bit you will not want to shoot anything else.

You ever break trigger springs Relliot? I shot with an SP01 for a while and broke a lot of trigger springs. However the feel of that trigger coming back is an advantage over shooting single action triggers in my opinion.

Not so far. Two years and may thousands of rounds later and counting...........
I don't know of anyone else who has either.

Are you sure it comes with 6 mags? The one I seen only had 2 mags. Where would be a good place to pick one up (fair price)?

The Limited Custom is S/A only. That is the Standard Division gun. If you want to go to Production Division, the Stock II is the way to go and it is D/A first shot and then S/A there after. The gun typically ships with two mags, but most people order them with six. The price mentioned by nognog (roughly) was with six.

I would go for the LCII if you can raise the cash.

I have a LC but I added the Ergal Aluminum grips. Those grips make the gun even better IMHO>

Not mention those slide slots are ###Y!

The gun comes with 2 mags you need to buy 4 more but they will not break the bank.

LC = Chrome stainless finish and wood grips.
LCII = black finish and lightened slide for faster cycling and aluminum grips.

Otherwise the same gun.

I find my Edge tracked a little better than my LC,...maybe because I put the lowest weight factory spring (11.2lb) in the LC using 175 + pf ammo in it,..and put a lower hammer spring in it(14lb, cut by 2 coils) as well.

My Edge had a heavier slide, and had the recoil master in it, so it probably absorbed more recoil than my LC set up.
I also like the reach to trigger on my 2011,...
The LC feels a little longer. I like the grip on my LC better than my Edge though..

Might try a 12lb recoil spring in my LC,....less beating on the frame, maybe even a 14lb....

I do like the Edge and the LC. Might pick them both up. Nah, not for now. To many guns not enough money.

For IPSC and Production be prepared for a very heavy trigger pull for the first shot. Replacing the mainspring - not allowed in production makes a huge improvement. Great guns but the factory could produce and offer lighter mainsprings as an option. That is my only complaint with my Tanfoglio. For IDPA ESP I can and do replace the mainsprings.

Production, I'll stay 9mm with my XD. I was looking more for Standard. I would like to shoot some IDPA.

I tought that for STD, if you can't afford the STI/SVI, the next best would be a Para Ord all dress with magwell/FO sight, etc.

Your XD in 9MM would be very competitive in ESP in IDPA. There were a number of them at the Washington State Championships last year.
