advice on hunting rifle for Bison

I had a BLR 450 marlin sweet rifle but getting ammo whas a pain at times
I,m thinking along that lines to sumthing like marlin gide rifle ss
Your .308 with a 180gr. bullet of a tougher construction will do the trick just fine. Personally, I'd also have no issues using my 6.5x55 Swed. or .260 Rem with a 140gr. Nosler Partion but many others will disagree with that.
That BLR in .450 Marlin would have been a great choice. It's too bad you don't have it anymore!
***I just saw Gatehouse's comment. If there is a law requiring you to use a minimum caliber or cartridge then by all means follow that law even if it doesn't, at times, make sense!

6.5x55, 260REM, 44mag, 357mag, and 7.62x39 are all illegal to hunt bison with in BC. The .308 just barely makes it over the legal limit.
All you need to know is, you need a rifle that fires bullets larger than .175gr and retains 2000ftlbs of energy at 100 meters.
This is BC hunting regulations.

From the 2012-2013 LEH Synopsis when hunting Bison in BC,
-Limited motorized access with snow machines is likely to be necessary for November and December but
snow depths may vary greatly from year to year.
-A Bison species licence will be available only by mail and only to those persons successfully drawn for a
Limited Entry Bison authorization.
-Hunters are prohibited from using a weapon other than:
a rifle that fi res a 175 grain or larger bullet retaining 2712 joules (2000 foot pounds) or more energy
at 100 metres, or
-a bow having a pull greater than 22.6 kg within the archer’s draw length, an arrow greater than 26
grams in weight and a broadhead greater than 8.1 grams in weight and 2.2 cm in width at its widest point.
-Hunters are reminded that under Section 35(2) of the Wildlife Act, anyone who kills or injures wildlife must make
reasonable attempt to retrieve that wildlife, and if it is alive, to kill it. This is particularly important with Bison.
So, one needs to figure out the energy requirements then they can start looking for rifles in caliber.
Ok, so the op is hunting in Alberta, look up the regs for Alberta and see what if any special restrictions maybe implied.

good to know thanks I have killed plenty of deer and 4 moose but never bison
Alberta does have restrictions on cartridge/caliber as well. It makes no sense once you read the muzzleloader section but it is the law so you better follow it! LOL!
