Advice on new 6.5x47 Build

Thanks very much for all the feedback guys. After spending some time over at the NSCC and talking to a few others that shoot Precision and/or 6.5x47s I'm about 95% decided on what I want to build. Through the magic of Photoshop I even have a pretty good idea how it should come out looking!

McMillan A5 GAP Camo w/ Adjustable Cheek Piece
Stiller TAC 30 LBLP
Broughton 5C 7.75 Contour, 8 twist finished at 28"
PTG Bottom Metal for AI Mags
Stiller 20 MOA Rail
Sightron SIII 8-32 x 56
TPS Rings
Harris 6-9 w/ Podclaws

If I did all my math right it'll end up being right around 15 1/2 pounds with optic and bipod, which is a little heavier than I originally had planned but the more I thought about it the more I wanted a tactical looking rifle.

Very nice looking rig and gear. However, as was said, will be very heavy with lousy balance.

If muzzle velocity is a concern, go to a larger case and shorter barrel. That large and long barrel will be difficult to balance from unsupported positions.

Precision/Service rifle matches as well as various run and gun games put higher emphasis on being ABLE to deliver the shot. The targets tend to be relatively big.

Speed, movement, balance would be much higher priorities.

What you have pictured there is a Camo'ed mag fed F Open rig. I have little doubt it will shoot superbly from the prone rested positions but you may find it much harder to use from barracade, unsupported and wonky positions.

YMMV.

Thank you again for the feedback Jerry.

I probably should have been more clear that this rifle is intended solely for the Precision/Sniper (sorry, I used the S word) component of the NSCC and OSA matches, which are shot from a prone position off a bipod. Many rifles I saw in use were very similar to those in F-Class, and in some cases they actually served double duty so your comparison is a good one. There is only one event where you need to run with the rifle for 100m (or yards?), so that help me make peace with the extra weight.

You and Longshot both make good points that for Service/Tactical Rifle events this would not be the best choice, but with no RPAL and a wife wary of anything other than a "hunting" rifle an AR or other black rifle is not in my immediate future.

If you can't use a gas gun, consider a blaser. As far as I can tell, the fastest running bolt out there.

For what customs will cost, a factory blaser might just do all that you want out of the box????

There are AR180's and Sig semis. These are accurate and non restricted.

Even a Mini14 target in a SPARTA stock could do a very nice job as a service rifle rig and we can put on a twist to make the 22cal heavies sing. Mags are short but 77gr MK's could fit. 68/69's should.

As always, define the game and work backwards to the gear. Everything has its place but you will compromise if you use 1 tool for too many jobs.

What you have pictures is a really nice rig and will do many things very well. Enjoy and let me know if you need some nice 6.5's to test. Bergers and JLK's are instock.

YMMV.

I would recommend a MacMillan A3 stock. It is similar to the A4-5, but has a smooth uninterrupted stock bottom for infinite bag adjustment. This is very important during the falling plates phase, and you may have to slide the rear bag quite a bit forward, because you did not pick the most ideal prone rifle position on the mound. Time wasted adjusting your position is your first enemy. However, if you use your rear hand during this shooting phase the A5 is a good choice.

Nscc sniper doesn't have that much fire and movement nor weird positional shooting. If you have a 24-26 inch barrel you should be good to. Hopefully ill be shooting it with a 28 incher next year. The only real thing that you will probably need is a mag. Other than that you can get by if you are koderately fit.
