Advice on offer received...

I agree, at one time I had zero rating also and nobody pulled that with me, thankfully.

Hell yeah. Gotta be some trust involved, at least until proven otherwise.

Pretty sure it was the first or second thing I bought here was a Leica rangefinder that was sent to me by an established guy that told me to send the money or send the goods back, if I was happy or not happy with it. <shrug> If you cannot get sorted out with a phone call, maybe the potential buyer should best look elsewhere.

Cheers
Trev

He wasn't trying to trick me by asking I send my $ 800. gun to him in Mission BC from Montreal without ever making an offer for the gun ?
I was the seller and out of the blues, I receive his message.
Like send it to me and I will send you what I think it worth or what I can pay or never will and that to protect himself from fraud ?????

Come on !

I can understand this "private club" rating system among frequent buyers and sellers but this system means nothing to me when asked
to send $ 800. away to a stranger 4,900 kilometers away.

To me he is a 92 points crook who is proving by his actions that the point system is out-dated and really offer NO protection against fraud.

For my respect for all the other members who are as passionnate and honest as I am, I will not state this crook's name on this page.
I will leave that to the people in charge of this fine forum. Will members, with or without points, be protected against his bad faith ?

As for me, I will not buy or sell here so you will all, at least, be protected against me !

Let's close this subject now.

You stated he pmd you " Let me know if you are interested in what I am offering ". That is the opening for negotiations. You're supposed to continue dialogue such as come to a deal with price etc. Or if you don't agree. Your sudden irrational jump that the other party is wanting to decide a price after you send the firearm , is weird and kind of self serving although not really following reality.

I wouldn't send you money. You joined how long ago, have almost no posts for when you joined and 0 trader rating? 23 posts since 2012 with most of them being only in the last bit? Hmmmm. You need a lot of exceptional deals to make up for being stung once.

The trader rating has served me well so far. It seems fairly indicative of how the person will be to deal with. That and a check on their posts. As you pretty much don't have either, it's dicey. COD or some other arrangement is the only way I would ever make a deal with you at this stage. It would be a cold day in H#ll before I blindly sent someone money, especially with a bunch of red flags from the get go.

A buyer here requested COD as my trader rating was low..it was understandable and worked out well. I recently shipped a gun to a guy with a high trader rating without payment..on faith..though it was a low value item to be fair.

There are plenty of ways to do business and protect both parties without requesting someone send you a gun without payment.

I would tell him, you send me the EMT first, or no deal. You can not cash the EMT until he receives the gun. Or perhaps, in two EMT's at half each or some such arrangement. But the price has to be agreed upon first. I buy and sell many things on this site. Mostly I buy more than I sell. I have never shipped nor had something shipped to me without payment first. If you are not getting anywhere, pass on the offer. You'll get another. Be patient.

I've bought 2 rifles off the EE from 0 ratings guys.
Both had joined specifically to sell their "barn find" rifles and had been members less than a week.
Both guys shipped me the rifles before payment, and both got paid promptly when the iron arrived.
No risk on my part, and no risk to them...as I am an honorable mofo :)

As long as both sides end up happy, whatever works to get a deal done I reckon.

So far, I have only bought, not sold. I made sure that EMT was there fast and replies to PM's quick. A phone call helps too. It can confirm location and identity quite easily.

That makes 2 of us. But, I'm not sure about the mofo part. Laugh2

Hi,

I'm in Montreal and have a gun for sale on this site...
I have receive this "offer" ...

"Hi I am interested in your Winchester 22 WMR. I have always made it a habit of not buying from members with 0 ratings as all the risk would be on me. I have about 90 transactions on CGN at 100% positive feed back. You are a complete unknown risk. (based on your ratings) Its nothing personal but I would prefer a transaction where you ship me the gun and I send money once I receive it, my ratings should give you the confidence for this type of arrangement. EMT is very easy if you are already doing any online banking. Let me know if you are interested in what I am offering "

What do you think of such an offer ?
Please note that I have chosen to hide this BC member's name.

Should I send my gun like that ?

Dominik

Currently getting this pulled on me.
I understand where they are coming from, but to send a close to $700 gun to a complete stranger without payment is a little disconcerting.
That being said, I can see how a 'complete stranger" would find it a little disconcerting to send $700 to a complete stranger.
Catch 22.

I'll guess the buyer wasn't into guns when Canadian Access To Firearms was the go-to place for buying and selling... No emails, no pictures, no EMT.
You just picked up the phone, called the seller, asked your questions and made an offer... and sent money way... and a few weeks later you got your gun.

Dominik,

If your planning on selling the gun, I wouldn't bother with a blueing job.
- It will not add value to the firearm
- To many seller, a re-blued gun will be worth less than a gun showing honest wear.

Your loss, Ive been here since the beginning and I never got scammed. We never had the feedback system back then, nor do I find it should be used as a trust. People these days are too quick to blame Cannot beat good ol fashion communication.

OT forum had a rather lengthy thread about a high-trader rating /respected member of CGN that went rogue and went on a ripoff spree. Forget the guys name but i think he just disappeared after that [maybe pinked]

All deals come down to Communication. Kijiji am I going to deal with the same person again? probably not. FB alot been one time deals. CGN most of the persons I dealt with I never dealt again ( nothing bad, Just one time deals ) Trust me I have ### is like famous last words. Its a number that doesn't mean much.

I personally wouldn't bite on an offer like this revolving around feedback rating. The only advantage a higher feedback rating gives from what I can see is a quicker sale on expensive items. Folks that have been on here a long time with a high feedback can reliably sell things that would take a newbie a lot longer as I believe that a lot of buyers look at feedback to assure themselves that they won't get ripped off. It definitely doesn't give a buyer/seller the ability to ask somebody to take unnecessary risks in selling their items. I remember when CGN was a very small community and it wasn't unheard of to send firearms before transfers were completed. Thank goodness those days are over. I hated seeing the random post from somebody upset that a restricted firearm was sent without the transfer being completed because the other party got busy or was just forgot to complete the transfer.

With a relatively low rating myself I can somewhat relate but my first deal on here was for an $800 dollar gun that was paid for and picked up by a buddy of the buyer some four weeks later. Both party's were satisfied after email and telephone conversations and the trust established meant something. Fast forward to last week and I was dealing with a member with no rating. Again, communication was key, both electronically and by phone and both being reasonable people COD seemed to protect everyone. I have a short wait for the gun and he has a short wait for his money.
If I dealt with someone with a high trader rating that was giving me a bad vibe COD would be the choice or no deal. On the other hand EMT have been sent to people with low ratings with no issue either. To me communication is key and my skills of cross examination help.
I have a good BS meter which helps but I have also had folks on here shut down when asked for a face to face deal, hmmmm. Touch wood, I can say that I have not been burnt on any online transaction. Is the risk there, yes but I will never give up on trusting my fellow man, to whatever degree they come across at.

I don't care if he had 1 million positive rating. I wouldn't ship anything until I got the cash. Him saying that you should trust him because he has 90 positive rating is enough for me NOT to trust him. It could have been 90 10$ items.

You are 100% correct.

You guys realize the OP hasn't posted since that last response and still has a zero trader rating? High risk!! COD!!
