Advice wanted 12g Ammo for home family Care

So someone breaks into your home and is raping your daughter and you’re just going to sit there shaking your head, maybe offering some supporting words for your daughter to just hang in there. You’re the one who needs help. Go read the criminal code.

00 buck... low recoil 1200 feet per second. Out of my 14” shotgun at 20 feet the spread is the size of a small dinner plate.

Not saying it’s never happened but can’t say I remember even one news story about a break in and a daughter being raped.

Place where I live is nice and middle class. But there's a skytrain not far away.
There have been reports in my neighbourhood of an agitated guy banging on doors looking for 'Linda'. When the door opens, he get's increasingly confrontational and then tries to push his way into the house. At 2-3am. By the time the cops come, he is long gone. The cop shop is a 2 minute drive away.

Who opens their %$#& door in the middle of the night to an agitated guy looking for Linda?

Not this horse.

Not completely sure I'm understanding this. You're suggesting that home invasions involving rape don't happen? A rather famous case comes instantly to mind, though I've heard of many, many others over the decades. Ever heard of the Petit family being viciously attacked, the wife and daughter murdered, the husband/father being seriously injured and barely escaping while his family was being raped, tortured and killed? Makes for some rather horrific reading.

And then there was that police detective in California, called the 'Golden State Killer' at the time, whose specialty was using his authority, his badge, to enter homes, then to restrain any men, put dinnerware on their backs and tell them that if he heard plates falling he'd murder their loved ones, after which he would proceed to rape and murder their female family members. Lovely fellow. They finally caught him as a feeble old man, long after his lengthy crime spree, thanks to some relative getting a DNA ancestry test done.

Richard Ramirez was another infamous creep in California, a spree killer who seemed to love the suffering of his several victims.

In any of these cases a pistol or shotgun or whatever handy firearm in the hands of the residents might have proven effective in preventing their victimization. But perhaps you weren't suggesting what it seemed you were suggesting and you agree? Hard to tell, because if you're implying home invasions leading to rape and often murder don't happen, dude, you're living in unicornland.

Lol, ya to all the people who say how rare it is, I say better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!!!

a friend once told me to go birdshot/#7 target load first 00 buck next and slug third. His rational was if getting peppered by the first round wasn't enough to make the threat rethink it's action the 00 certainly would, if the 00 didn't stop the threat the slug will.

That is bad advice, and I’m being polite.

It won’t matter what first round comes out of your barrel, birdshot, 00, slugs or anything else. At the end, you still shot at someone. And if someone entered your house with intentions up to the point of you shooting at it, clearly it’s a threat that had its chance prior to entering the safety of your house, too bad for him.

And for the slug... what are your friend and your intention with that ?

Peppering the guy with birdshot so he leaves then pursue him outdoor to shoot him ? Or is the intention to use a slug indoor ? We just shot a 45 gallon drum filled with water at work with a Federal slug from 15m and it went thru both walls. So slugs in a home defense purpose are an issue when it comes over penetration.

For those wanting real advices:

- #4 buck or 00 federal flite control
- don’t forget the flashlight
- know the law and have a lawyer ready
- remain silent and do not provide a written statement. Let the lawyer do his job.

But the most important advice:

make yourself and your house harder targets. Not gonna go into details but criminals are cowards and lazy, unless targeted (no luck here). Have lights around the house, tough locking mechanism and reinforced door frame. There are way to make ground level windows quite tough thru the use of films and locking mechanism etc etc. Make entry in your house as hard and no worth it as possible. Having a defense mean is awesome but if one can get in your house with a kick, by the time you’re up and ready, it’s too late. Home security is a layered thing, the forest. A gun for home defense is the tree that many see without seeing the forest.

1. Read and understand section 34 of the criminal code.
2. If you have to resort to using your shotgun to defend yourself/protect life from an imminent deadly threat, consider reduced recoil 00 buck. There is a reason that police use this load.
3. If you use lethal force to stop the threat, always go with the “plus one rule” and remain vigilant. Bad guys rarely operate alone - assume that there may be other threats in your home until proven otherwise.
4. Have someone call 911 if not already done.
5. Consider administering first aid to the bad guy once it is safe to do so. This speaks to your mindset - i.e. your actions were to stop the threat and not kill someone. This will become important later.
6. Do not make any statement. You will not be in the right mindset after a lethal confrontation and may say something that will later be used against you. Call a lawyer - you will need one to protect your interests from criminal and civil liability. In Canada there is a high likelihood that the Crown Attorney will seek to prosecute you, even when you are attempting to do the right thing in protecting yourself or your family. This could run the gamut from careless storage all the way to murder charges.
7. Lastly practice, practice, practice. Both on the range and dry (with dummy rounds/snap caps/etc). Train to remove trigger locks and load up in the pitch black with your heart rate up (e.g. run up a few flights of stairs and rep out a bunch of push-ups first). Talk to your family about what you need them to do/where to go should an armed intruder break into your home. Have a plan. Finally, if you do ever have to use lethal force (and I sincerely hope that you don’t) the old adage still rings true: it’s better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.

These strike me as being all very sound recommendations. Good editing work in writing this list.

For short ranges, as in inside the house, 7 and 1/2 birdshot will stop any wrong doer in his tracks. 99 % will look for the nearest exit upon hearing a pump shotgun slide being racked. Buckshot and slugs, though more lethal, could possibly pass through walls and harm people that you do not wish to harm.

Pass the fudd light.

Indeed. Wishful thinking on the ol' rack 'em and they turn tail and run trick. Seems anyone with any expertise at all dismisses this as pure 100% fuddery. Right up there with Joe Biden's priceless nonsense about unloading both barrels of your SxS into the air over a team of home invaders. Um, Joe, how's the wife going to do with her tactical reload while they bum rush the porch? I've actually looked that clip up a couple of times over the years, just to be certain he actually said something so amazingly stupid. Yup, he sure did:

It’s always entertaining reading or listening to dimwits (usually on the left) that make statements like Biden. They display their complete ignorance on firearms, not to mention the fact that he conveniently omitted to say that as VP he and his family benefited from 24/7 secret service protection and as POTUS he will continue to do so for the rest of his life. He has lived his life as a rich entitled elitist that has never had to worry about personal security. Unfortunately his ill informed opinions are however eaten up by the anti-gun socialists/liberals that think they know what is best for everyone else.
