Advice wanted 12g Ammo for home family Care

Indeed. Wishful thinking on the ol' rack 'em and they turn tail and run trick. Seems anyone with any expertise at all dismisses this as pure 100% fuddery. Right up there with Joe Biden's priceless nonsense about unloading both barrels of your SxS into the air over a team of home invaders. Um, Joe, how's the wife going to do with her tactical reload while they bum rush the porch? I've actually looked that clip up a couple of times over the years, just to be certain he actually said something so amazingly stupid. Yup, he sure did:

I like this version too!

I have a side by side blackpowder ten gauge coachgun of Parkhurst make hammer gun.
Be damned if I am going to waste a shot pointed skyward. Buckshot is expensive.

Brutus, I generally like your posts. But why some of you guys post this stuff on a social media site is a real head shaker. I mean if the worst happens you know they’ll be checking your online history.

I don’t get it.

Ya, whatever...I'd like to see someone carry on with their wrongdoing with a belly full of bird shot. The one case that I seen, the would be robber asked for his mother and bled out before the ambulance arrived.

Lots of people have died to 22LR, doesn’t make it a good self defence round.

Also still unclear on the physics of why the sound of a pump action triggers an involuntary flight reaction 99% of the time.

For those wanting real advices:

- #4 buck or 00 federal flite control
- don’t forget the flashlight
- know the law and have a lawyer ready
- remain silent and do not provide a written statement. Let the lawyer do his job.

I agree with your sentiment about security being layered.
Just wondering, why #4 buck? Just easier to find? Patterns easier through chokes?

Right balance between stopping power and minimizing the accidental over penetration risks. I wouldn’t know about the effects in/on chokes though.

Interesting, thanks. Ballistics gel tests show 00 buck very rarely overpenetrates but I see your concern and your preference to completely eliminate that chance is perfectly valid. Wouldn't you need a higher velocity with #4 than 00? Honestly this would probably never be a factor in my life, personally, just a fun brain exercise.

I believe the FBI settled on a #4 buck reduced recoil load after some study. Also how they got to premium 9mm ammo, and a really good 5.56 load.

Digging around I think I was wrong on #4, it was #1 that meets the 12”+ penetration standard. Generally recoil is a problem with a 12g, the federal flight control 12g 00 buck LE round comes in a fairly normal load, or a reduced recoil.

And it produced very tight pattern from 0 to 25m even out of a 14" barrel.

+1 on Federal reduced recoil “tactical” with “flite control”. Very tight patterns with 8 pellet OO buck and #1 buck. “Lucky Gunner” researched patterns between various brands out of an 870 with 18” barrel.

Hopefully a site sponsor will stock up on this ammo as it seems to be hard to find in Canada, maybe because of virus pandemic buying south of the border.

Heard a good rumour in Key West that #4 nickel plated buckshot was the bee's knees for smashing out side windows most cars with just one shot, and lower chance killing passengers.
But federal budgets would not allow for increased costs hence dropped from inventory.

I am not too far away from you in Burnaby by the skytrain and a complementary treatment centre nearby. The other day at 9am my neighbour, who has a wife and two young ankle biters, goes to take the garbage out. While he is coming back up in the elevator His security camera goes off. In walks a model citizen into his yard, with the jig we all know. He has a mask on because of Covid and a sunken hat. Oddly enough he wasnt smart enough to wear sunglasses which would have obscured his whole face combined with the mask. Anyways he does a couple of hot laps in the yard then makes his move towards the sliding glass door (which was locked). He then scopes a window where in which a camera is staring at him. His computer jams for a minute and then he retreats. Anyways no cool ending to the story where he gets hit by thunder and lightning. I feel for my neighbour, he is a gentle soul and very kind. The last guy on the earth who needs to be scared for his families safety.

Anyways, I mentioned this story to someone. And their first reaction was to ask if the person had a weapon. I mentioned I didn’t think so and that person proceeded to say “so how was he going to harm the family? the last person to break into my house fed my dog spaghetti and then left”. Unfortunately people don’t understand that being in a drug induced state on certain drugs is a weaponized human. Or that people’s intentions, previous experience or hidden weapons have their utility.

So before TLDR remember to have sticks in window sills, keep doors locked, invest in a ring system, leave lights or music on, have an alarm, run drills, etc. Preventative measures are like preventative maintenance and if applied will give you a fighting chance and longevity.

Place where I live is nice and middle class. But there's a skytrain not far away.
There have been reports in my neighbourhood of an agitated guy banging on doors looking for 'Linda'. When the door opens, he get's increasingly confrontational and then tries to push his way into the house. At 2-3am. By the time the cops come, he is long gone. The cop shop is a 2 minute drive away.

A friend of mine lives on the Island, down the street they put in temporary/affordable/vulnerable people (ie druggies) housing. Cue tanking house values, thanks for dumping your life savings into the property market chump. Anyway. Wife and a friend were home, having tea like ladies do when menfolk are out doing things. Suddenly there's a guy in the living room, looking confused. It's a nice neighbourhood, the door wasn't locked. The two women gently turn him around and usher him out. And probably throw a splash of irish in the tea.
30 minutes later confused returns and boots the door in, now confused AND agitated. The women folk retreat to the upstairs bedroom and bar the door while calling 911. By the time cops show up, confused and agitated is gone, and the two women are now shaken and scared.

Two stories, one very close to home, one not so much.

The way our country is going is not in the direction that is safer or better for regular folks. Yeah drug addicts and criminals because of the systemic racism and lack of opportunities they have faced are being treated better than ever; but that does not increase the security of joe and josie blow. When the police do show up their hands are tied - at best. The media has little interest in covering these kinds of things truthfully as it would be difficult without making it painfully obvious who the types of people are that are committing these crimes, I doubt more than a slim percentage of incidents get reported in the media. Canada is a safe and friendly place after all, wouldn't want to tarnish that reputation.

I think this post has gone on on enough.
Time to put it down.

Admin. can you please close this post.
Thanks to ALL for your replies.

You asked a question and I've seen a couple of posts in which you've asked the admin to shut it down ? don't ask a question if you don't want many answers. and Nibe you stated that you have never heard in the News that someone's daughter has been raped in a home that has been broken into ? usually because those who could speak for themselves were dead. take the time and watch a few episodes of the Last 48 hours . then you will know what kind of mental individuals walk the streets. I know a few retired law enforcement officers who are great guys most with over 30 years of service. I had one say you don't know how cheap life is . and another one stated there is a lot of bad people out there. and this was just the other day .

I have met many decent people in my life time but I have also met some unsavory individuals . this is not the USA but you still have the right to live . be careful people .
