It looks like a hugely tweaked further development of the original AEK that dated back to the Abakan trials of the '90s.

I'd be surprised if this ended up being selected for service over the politically powerful, newly named Kalashnikov Corporation's AK-12.

That sliding stock kind of funky, probably not too comfortable though, I wonder if it has built in mechanical recoil buffering like the Chinese QBS-09 shotgun stock that it resembles?

AEK 971 is a shelved project. it will never see major service ( However Spetznaz did trial some ), Neither will the AK-12 as they dont offer enough over the AK74
Same way that the SCAR MK16, XM8 and Robarms XCR etc etc arent replacing the AR platform in US forces competitions.

I see from the article that they are actually revamping the old 971 design with some new features ( rails, and stock options etc ) ... there may be a new competition coming up for the Russian forces. Dont hold out any hope for it though.

There's no way to put a picatinney dust cover rail cheaply on an AK-74 though, that's without getting into the increased modularity and controllability of the new designs.

Plus, even with the U.S. civilian market now open to them, I don't see how the new Kalashnikov Corporation is going to be able to last if they don't offer something besides older rifles designs.

that strange muzzle brake is also awful looking...looks like a rape whistle!

I'm not sure about the AEK, but the AN-94, which also has a big weird looking brake, was designed so that at least part of the sound of firing was converted so that it fell beyond the range of human hearing.

Its not a true suppressor by any means but not as loud as a big aggressive brake would otherwise be.

It could be the case for the AEK as well.
