Well I just bought my first Pellet Rifle in 43 years lol! I bought a Crosman Nitro Venom, it is a .177 caliber and the box says it shoots 1,200 FPS. It has a Center Point 3-9x32 Scope mounted on it.

I have some questions for you guys in the know!

First off when I got home I but a target out at 20 yards because I wanted to sight in the scope. To my surprize the pellets were flying all over the place and all over the target as much as 10" apart from one another and would not go to the same aiming point! The pellets I purchased are the Crosman Premier Super Point Hunting Pellet. So I called the manufacturer and asked them about the scope being broken. The support rep I spoke with told me that before I CAN NOT expect any type of accuracy that I would have to fire 250 rounds through the barrel. Is this true?

He also told me to tighten the screw that attach the barrel to the stock, which I did, VERY TIGHT. The rifle is still all over the map!

Also

What is the effective killing range on grouse and rabbits for this type of rifle?

How do I get this Air Rifle to shoot STRAIGHT???

What are the best type of pellets to kill birds?

Any advice in getting this Air Rifle to shoot straight would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Chances are it's never going to be very accurate. Not trying to be a jerk or anything but crosman springers are junk IMO. You'll get lot's of people who disagree with me though.

1200 fps is also way to fast. Pellets destabilise at speeds beyond 900 fps. Try the heaviest pellet that you can find and stick with a standard domed pellet.

It is true that you need to shoot probably a tin of pellets through it before it settles down.

Head over to the "Canadian Airgun Forum". There are lots of people over there that have a higher opinion of Crosman guns that should be able to help you out. Good luck.

I hope you are wrong about Crosman being junk! I hate wasting money!!!!!

I am going to shoot 250 shot out of it today. Then I will buy several varieties of pellets and see which group the best. I went for the 1200 thinking that it would be a better bird killer.

Do you know how to turn down the FPS on an Air Rifle?

First of all its not a Springer. Its nitro piston.
Second 1200fps is fine. They now make 1500fps and they work well too.
Something is up. Mine shoots 3/4 inch groups at 20 yards and had very little break in to do such.
I would try a couple different types of ammo, shoot a few hundred and see if that helps.
Carefull how you rest the rifle too. Any pressure on the barrel will have a big effect.
You cant change the velocity on a nitro piston, the speed is fine.

That was my first thought willisjake, "Something Is %*&@# Up!"

With the Air Rifle I just bought, in your opinion what is the effective killing range on birds?

Another question, can the trigger be adjusted to a lower weight? Thanks

I bought mine online from an air rifle store. I can't remember which one, and I don't want to earn an infraction trying to post any links anywhere that might now pay to advertise here. Most online stores or outdoors store carry them though, or ones that are similar. I have taken down all sorts of small game with them, however I think the last ones i used were .22's

what is the longest shot you have taken on small game with a pellet rifle? Still wondering what killing range my new toy has.)

I'm not wrong. Companies up the velocity on their airguns because novices think speed is better. Crosman is notoriously bad for this. It's difficult to reduce the velocity on that Nitro Piston gun, That is why I suggested using the heaviest pellet possible. If it's not to late to return it I would suggest looking at a Diana or Weihrauch.

Sent you a PM. Again Good Luck.

Squirrels are easy at 100 yards or so, same with groundhogs.. If you get good pellets and you can get a good shot, it's easy

Go watch the next thread about powerful air rifles. Speed above 800 - 900 feet per second does NOT equal accuracy. Bearing that in mind, air rifles are a short range affair. Go watch varmint hunters TV on Utube. They guy is an air rifle expert and expert shot. You will notice 50 yards (and less) is more the norm. That's with 22 caliber rifle. My personal thoughts are beyond that is quite irresponsible.

I feel your frustration. My first Nitro piston was not capable of repeatable accuracy. 500 + shots with multiple pellet options. Would get a 4 in a dime then 2, 2"+ away ?
Sent that gun back, Crossman sent a new gun and 750 different pellets. After 100 shots the Domed Premier line 10.5gr are fantastic in the new gun.
It takes a lot of concentration to overcome the terrible trigger though. Now my go to for pest control out to 70 yards.

My personal best is a starling at 60 yards. It's my go to for cleaning out the hangar every spring.

And by the way, just so you're aware the 1200's only shoot 1200fps if their shooting the super light tin alloy pellets. All your lead pellets will be closer to 1000fps or under.

I generally use the best pellets in mine,RWS,JSB,HN.
It will shoot 1 ragged hole at 20 yds rested. (900 fps at muzzle with 8.3 grn pellet around 14fpe)
I feel lucky shooting "minute of tin can" at 100 yds.(24'' drop from a 30 yd sight in)
I don't think I would try to shoot at anything living at 100 yds.

To the OP,
Shoot small game at any range you are confident you can hit a 1 inch circle target, almost every time.
I keep my shots under 40 yds.(I use a laser rangefinder)
Good luck with your new rifle.

If this rifle does not start behaving real soon its going back to Crosman for a replacement. I have dropped big game at over 600 yards so I know it isn't me!

You are right about the trigger, it sucks! Can it be adjusted?
