i was talking with some buddies tonight and we got on the subject of personal home defense. how if you shoot someone youre going to jail and you can only use as much force as necessary. so someone said what about shotgun shells with salt in them, and i said, what about airsoft bb's instead. load it so it doesnt come out too fast, 800 fps or so. would be none lethal, or atleast i think it would be. the only thing i could see is the plastic bb's melting while fired. anyone ever thought of doing anything like this?

The wad is still potentially lethal at close range - make sure you keep that in mind. Doing a flat cardboard or pasted tissue wad may help with this, though.
For my money, they'll still charge you with every firearm offense if you discharge a firearm in self-defense... so, frankly, going with the most lethal option and employing it ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY is the best course of action IMO. Rock salt or airsoft BBs will still see you charged with pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, etc. if you run into the "right" (read: wrong) kind of LEOs investigating your case.
And, frankly, I don't like the odds of finding a LEO in Canada who's sympathetic - or a Crown Prosecutor who's sympathetic - to that situation... so you might as well go "all or nothing" IMO.

Homemade ammo for self defense is a very bad idea even in the States with castle law and all that. And that includes handloading 'normal' ammo.
Even with less lethal ammo. If you were using 'non lethal' ammo why did you shoot the guy at all, etc...

Less lethal / non-lethal ammo is the WORST idea you could have in a defense situation. You'd be more screwed than if you killed the guy.
If you NEED to shoot a firearm in defense of your life of the life of someone under your care, you don't want 'less lethal' or 'just hurt 'em' ammo. You would shoot to stop the threat. Period. That means standard ammo. If you shot to 'scare him' or 'wound him', it means you didn't really need to shoot at all, and hence, you're screwed in court. TERRIBLE IDEA.
This topic comes up about 1000x per week. If you're sitting around thinking of ways to wound or scare an intruder with a firearm, you need your head examined.

You can only legally point a gun, let alone shoot someone if you fear for your life. Loading shotgun shells with anything other than lethal ammunition , let alone shooting someone with it opens up all kinds of doors to prove you may not have had a legitimate fear for your life.

Yeah if your going to shoot someone you better kill them. We can't use guns for self defense (or so the crown wants us to think) and they'll charge your a** into the stone age if you shoot someone with less than lethal anything. Using less than lethal rounds implies that you preemptively prepped for shooting someone and therefore will open the door for not only the crown to prosecute you but also you risk be sued for injury by the robber you jsut shot. I know that that is absurd in a logical world but remember this is Canada so if your going to shoot them please make it count.

this was more of a discussion we had to see its effectiveness and i thought id ask the guys who have likely thought of it aswell. good points about the pre meditated stuff. at the same time i guess that keeping a shotgun under the bed could fall into the same category. if it ever came down to it id be sure to point out he had one of my large kitchen knives in his hand clearly free of my finger prints nd that he may or may not have cut me with it

If you're justified in dropping the hammer on someone it is because you are in fear for your life (death or grave bodily injury) - are you going to trust a bucnh of low velocity plastic chunks to deter some methed-up piece of shyte who wishes to harm you or your family??? Let me know how that works out. If you just want to scare someone, get a Halloween mask - real life isn't COD where yoiu get to respawn or whatever it's called...

As far as the shotgun, under the bed goes. What shotgun under the bed? Refer back to my previous quote. The only way that would be known is if you open your mouth, which you just did.

I don't know if it comes up that frequently...
But here's my thoughts.
First of all: forget making your own s**tty shells and fork out the $20-50 for some real "non-leathal" ammunition. This type of ammunition can be bought in Canada from Margo Supplies. Speficaly, you should buy either the rubber buckshot, rubber slugs, or bean bag rounds.
Second: Non of this "non-leathal" stuff is made for home defence. It's made for stuff like animal scaring and riot control. I say "non-lethal" because it could very easily still kill somone. Even if it does not kill them, you could still be charged for pointing/discharging your firearm at somone. Just look at that guy whos house got fire bombed and is facing criminal charges, eventhough he fired into the air!
Oh and one last thing: You may want to shoot to kill, you may want to shoot to harm, but if you really cant decide, just load the mag tube with and increasingly leathal load, such as:
- 2 Rounds Rubber buckshot
- 1 Rubber Slug/Bean Bag
- Remainder buckshot/slugs
And hey, just for s**ts, toss in a flare at the end, just in case its like that movie where the guys running away and there's a gas leak somewhere... Anyway, I digress...
