Can anyone tell me if a magazine from an AK-47 Kalashnikov (7.62x39mm) will work in my SKS Type 56 (7.62x39mm)? Detachable magazines.

my SKS is a Type 56, does that mean anything? Detachable mag. but don't know about a "D" series? Needing a new magazine. Wondering if the AK-47 with the same caliber will fit?

If your SKS already has an AK mag in it, it's a D model, if it has a fixed box magazine, it is not a D model, and will not fit AK mags.

Maybe posting pics would help us give you a better answer.

Just amble on over to the Red Rifles forum and all of your questions, and MORE will be answered....Just check in on the Type 56 FAQs! Lot of info.

The key thing to note is that the AK series and the SKS are two different animals.

They may share a few features, but parts between the two are not compatable.

If you have a military Type-56, those will not take AK mags.

SKS-D and SKS-M are Chicom commerical varients for the Type-56, these take AK mags.
Military Type-63 uses AK mags also, but I do not think they did any commercial export of those.

good one Deckard! to the OP, the SKS-D was a late model commercial chinese SKS that has a groove machined into the reciever to create the lip that catches the front of the AK mag, and uses a proprietary trigger group with an AK mag release. It is missing the bolt hold open tab and the machined inlet for it, and the bolt carrier does not have a stripper clip guide. If you have a standard hinged floorplate magazine type 45 or 56 SKS then you can get aftermarket duckbill magazines for them in both steel and plastic. There is even a machined block you can install that lets you remove most of the duckbill.
