Akkar Churchill SxS

Have to say I picked one of these up in 12g and english stock after reading this thread. I already own a 206 sporting in 32" which I enjoy. This gun mounts quick and beautifully and will be light to carry at 6 pounds. Will report back after my duck hunt this weekend.

I handled one of these in 20ga with the straight stock.
I liked it, reminded me a bit of a SKB at first with the black barrels.

And you are correct, real slim petite receiver with smooth rounded edges, that was impressive!

I’m thinking they are right there with the CZ’s for a value priced double, maybe better depending what you prefer.
I found the CZ Bobwhite had a stiff action, heavy triggers and balanced like a truck axle.

Beretta, I hope you are getting a commission on these.

After reading your review (and a few PM), I knew this was the shotgun I wanted. Met all my "wants":
- Light
- Offered in 20ga
- English stock
- Single trigger (selective)
- 28" barrels

Really wish it would of been offered with ejectors, but I can live with extractors.

Metal to wood fit is pretty good. The action locks up tight.

I saw an ad for a previously owned (but unfired) Akkar Churchill 520 with english stock, so I jumped on it. It even had the hard-case, which I think is nice.

I'm hoping to give it a proper review once I try it, but until then:

That's how they are made, with the lever centred. A different type of design with a unique spring. The lever is quick, slaps hard, feels a tad cheaper. Sloppy isn't the word but something like that.

The lever on my gun is not sloppy at all. Its very smooth and crisp. Its very well used and it has yet to loosen up. Not quite sure what you mean by cheaper, but mine doesn’t feel any different then my Brownings or Beretta. Actually, I had a problem with my Browning 725 that needed adjustment and my 20g Citori hangs up a tad which is annoying.

I finally got some time to try out the SxS. Very impressed!

It is very light, but not so much that the 20ga target loads recoil too much. I shot 50'ish rounds (Federal Topgun target loads, #7.5) this past week-end and the shoulder was as if nothing happened.

Carrying it (albeit for a limited amount of time) was pure pleasure.

I don't have anything to measure trigger pull weight, but it didn't seem excessively heavy.

I'm not sure exactly how to say this, but it seemed very simple to point at the clays with it. I thought I wouldn't hit anything, but I was able to hit quite a few for a first time out with the shotgun.

Super happy with my purchase.

I got myself one of these in 28 gauge.
Churchill 528 Gold SxS, 28" barrels, pistol grip.

I'm impressed with it, and here are my thoughts:

Akkar has found a way to make a quality product at a fair price, they've kept the price reasonable, and they haven't cut corners doing it. Sales seem to be good, everyone is profiting.

The gun handles well, slim true to scale receiver with rounded edges, the balance point is approx 1/2 inch in front of the hinge pin. Good balance, barrel length and barrel weight, the gun does not feel whippy at all.

The stocks are good quality Turkish walnut, solid. The pistol grip is comfortable with a slight palm swell for right handers. The checkering can be felt and is in the right place, useful. The forestock is a very slim semi beavertail, not bulky, just enough to grab without holding onto the hot barrels, comfortable and again the checkering is well thought out.

All wood is only slightly proud of the metal, it is not crude or blocky at all. Everything is snug, the fit of the forestock is nice and firm.

The slim recoil pad I really like, not thick, not bulky, does the job and is fitted to the stock perfectly. I like it.

The barrels are a nice rich blackened type of blue, somewhat similar to the old SKB Model 100's. I like it.

The rib is concave, the single brass bead is solid and effective. The barrels do not flare out at the chokes, it is well done.

It comes with 5 choke tubes, I believe they are Remington style tubes, could be wrong. Cylinder, I/C, M, I/M and Full. They are flush mount and the included choke wrench is adequate. The tubes screw in smooth, there is no binding at all.

The receiver is steel, which I prefer. I don't like the feel of the aluminum type receivers. There is no fancy engraving and no cheap cheesy laser etching either. I like it. It could be said that the look is that of a Ruger Gold Label, dare I say.

The gun opens and snaps shut the way you'd want it. Snug enough but not stiff, you don't have to Crack it over your knee.

The safety switch is well thought out. Enough meat to it to work well on an upland gun and the selector functions as it should, not stiff. It is a manual safety, no automatic nonsense. I like it.

The trigger is nothing to complain about I don't know the pull weight but it is good in my books. Much better than CZ/Huglu in my opinion. It is a mechanical trigger and works as it should.

The gun weighs approx 5.25lbs and it handles recoil very nicely for the weight. There is no twisting torque at the shot and muzzle jump is minimal.

The gun is equipped with extractors, which I prefer and they work as they should.

It's all steel and walnut. No plastic or pot metal or cheap nickel plating. I like it.

To me these are the SKB 100 type of value of today's market. I like the Akkar much more than what CZ, Huglu and Yildiz have had to offer.

Akkar has found a way to make a quality product at the proper price to sell in volume. The people making these guns are putting in the effort and the brains behind the operation seem to be very sharp.

This is a quality field gun that performs and has the right feel. At roughly $1100 retail, I don't think it can be beat.

Akkar provides a 5 year warranty. And the gun comes with a pretty nice case. Not sure what else to say.

I own SxS's made by Fausti, FAIR, SKB, Franchi, Bernardelli, Fabarm etc.

To summarize, in my opinion it's better than the CZ/Huglu SxS's.

Mount Sweatness, glad to see you got your 28ga!

I couldn't of said it better than your review...however, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say: Post pics!! ;-) We want to see it that SxS.

I hesitated for a long time between getting a 520 and saving up some more to get a FAIR. How do they both compare in your opinion? Both in terms of brut pros/cons and then when taking into account that 1 of the two is more than half the price of the other?

I'm already thinking about maybe trying to get a second SxS. Addictive stuff ;-)

Hi Dave,
The FAIR Iside is 3 times the price but to me it's certainly not 3 times the gun.

Of course the finish on the Iside, the details are there, the Churchill is not flashy.

I like the look of the Iside but I prefer the fit of the Churchill.

The Iside is designed as an English Game gun, something that I'm not as used to.
It requires a certain style of mount, a more delicate affair.

The recoil on the Iside I felt was excessive, a lot of jump and twist.

The Iside weighs maybe 1/4lb to a 1/2lb less, but that's not necessarily always a good thing.

Also the receiver on the Iside is petite but not really much smaller than the Churchill...maybe a 1/4 inch in width difference.

The Iside I had was in the 26" barrels, the gun was short light but incredibly whippy and delicate.

Of course the Iside is a "better gun" but for me at this time, I can't say anything bad about the Churchill at a third of the price.

If Akkar were to stamp "Ruger Gold Label" on those barrels, and dress them up, they'll sell like hot cakes.
