Alberta ban on spear hunting after American hunter kills black bear

Closest thing I would see myself doing is a survival situation. Have a cold steel big survival knife, tang is folded over and makes a hollow for adding a spear shaft. I was always told to never bother porcupines for that reason, anyone with a makeshift spear or club gets 30lbs of meat. Pretty crippled now, so really don't see myself in a survival spot, lost, middle of nowhere. Rambling.

Atlatls and spears were banned in Alberta after the video went viral and the politician / do gooders got hold of it .

I couldn't find it in the regs.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but about 30 years ago, American video hunting celebrity Dave Embry was promoting a hybrid treestand called the “Swivel Limb. Along with the treestand, customers also received a free hunting video which included a bear being speared on film. I think that the hunt occurred in Saskatchewan. If anyone is interested you can view the video here: https://youtu.be/JRk8jmm9KyQ?si=F6ozR5lbeAPlden7. The spear hunt is at the end of the video.

Josh Bowmar is a f@king turd of the greatest order.

I don't care that he speared a bear. I do care that he put it on social media for the world to see which in turn gathered all the bad press, leading to further restriction.

Influencers like the Bowmars only do it for likes and the money it generates.

You're being too kind to Josh. The only thing worse than the Bowmars are the people who support them.

Personally if you hunt with a spear in the wild you are a REAL hunter as the animal has the advantage. However If you bait wildlife into a closed area and just stab a animal with a spear you are a loser and should be banned from hunting period as that is just murder and not hunting...same with the "loser cougar hunter's" that use dogs to tree a cat and then blow it out of the tree, that's hunting? what clowns. Try hunting a predator one on one, if you can even find it and that is a real test of the hunter, anything else is just gratuitous mindless killing.

The"Hunting" part of cougar hunting involves the chase not the kill. However , many people share your views on baiting bears, running deer and coyotes, etc, with hounds, or even hunting with compounds and modern rifles as opposed to stick bows and traditional muzzle loaders, and many other types of hunting that are considered fair chase by others.

I use much more colourful language when referring to both Bowmars off of CGN.

Cam Hanes, Muley Freak and now Joe Rogan are up there too.

I'm not as bent out of shape about Rogan as a lot of people are. The biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know which leads him to say dumb things like "Find another trailhead, stupid". He's never found a single trailhead in his life so it's a little rich that he's going to spout off like that, though not surprising. Rogan brought a lot of attention to hunting. Some of that has been good. There are a lot of "influencers" who do all manner of stupidity for clicks and sponsorship and, frankly, they're the real problem.

Bowmar is a douche bag, but I love Rogan... he is new to hunting, so he is going to make some noobie mistakes.

Is all that attention to hunting really good though? The Bowmars of this world and their hordes of followers who support their every move, including defending them when they do unethical stuff or straight illegal, really helping us?

I don't think so. The majority of hunters on FB or IG are all trying to act like influencers. Guys are obsessed with the likes and attention they get from posting animals online. Hunting has now become a competition more than ever, it's who can get as many animals as they can and posting them with ridiculous #s and tags. Everyone wants to shoot 100 yard bows like Rogan and Hanes and take the same ridiculous shots in the field which most likely end up in more wasted/wounded game. Same goes for the long range hunting idiots who take completely unethical shots at moving targets 500+ meters away.

For rich guys like Hanes and Rogan to go on ranch hunts and pay big bucks to shoot a relatively tame elk, then push this as them being these hardcore hunters, only adds to the delusion hunters are being sold these days. You got to drink that stupid ELK BLOOD drink and wear Hanes' idiotic shoes with faux blood splatter on them. These celebrity hunters and influencers are 100% making it worst out there.

There are very few hunting celebrities/companies who are painting us in a good light, like MeatEater crew, GoHunt, OnX and Randy Newberg, but even those guys/companies are responsible for the explosion of hunting popularity that has led to atrocious draw odds in the US and ridiculously packed publics lands. Hunters are more willing to be unethical/break the law, when it's become a competition to shoot game. I strongly believe that, for the average hunter, it has become more about bragging rights, than the hunt itself.

Fortunately for us Canadians, these celebrities have had lower impacts, but I am still convinced it was more negative than good. At the end of the day, the spear hunting ban in Alberta and Grizzly hunting ban in BC, were direct causes of hunting social media.

Very true ^.

I'm fed up with the BS party line which says that we, as hunters, must accept and defend everybody's choices or methods as long as they are legal. Yes, we are under attack from all sides; we should try to present a united front...but if that means accepting and defending every idiotic, distasteful or otherwise questionable practice we see, just because it isn't illegal, maybe we deserve what we are getting.

Here it comes now: How dare you judge others' actions? What gives you the right to say something is right or wrong? You're the problem here!

Screw that. We are intelligent, rational beings and we must make our own judgments and choices.
