I just did something I don't think anybody in the entire world has ever done and that was spear a bear on the ground on film. And I smoked him.

The Alberta government says an online video showing a black bear being killed by a spear is unacceptable and it plans to ban the practice.

The video posted in June on the YouTube account of Josh Bowmar, who runs an Ohio-based fitness company with his wife, set off a deluge of outrage before it was made private.

By the time it was removed from public view on Monday it had garnered more than 208,000 views.

The 13-minute video shows the man launching a spear — with a camera attached — at a bear from 11 to 14 metres away and captures his jubilant reaction when the animal is hit.

Alberta Environment and Parks spokesman Tim Chamberlin called spear hunting an "archaic" practice.

"Work is well underway to update Alberta's hunting regulations. We will introduce a ban on spear hunting this fall as part of those updated regulations," he said in an emailed statement.

"In the meantime, we have asked Fish and Wildlife officers to investigate this incident to determine if charges are warranted under existing laws."

Bowmar said he was surprised by the reaction to the video. He said spears have been used for hunting since the "dawn of man" and the notion that the method is inhumane "couldn't be further from the truth."

He said the spear blade he used was 13 centimetres wide and about 40 centimetres long and penetrated the bear more than 60 centimetres deep.

Bear made it 70 yards nothing unethical about that kill from what I've read, total uneducated overreaction by anti hunters......I'm shocked...

It is because the video (now private) the camera was on the spear, i think that is what people were most upset about, and his reaction on film to the kill. not to mention:

i already posted somewhere else:

if the antis needed that to be against the hunters lol ...

is it legal? yes: so why bother.

we are our worst enemy, seems forget most of our local hunters are against elephant hunting or lion just per say ....

Just a suggestion, but maybe we shouldn't be posting this on the internet for all to see. I am sure if we post enough bow hunting videos, we could get that banned as well.

Another friggin' thread on this???

This "ban" is just a BS knee-jerk reaction to an "Anti-Hunter" outcry over the video... this guy is FAR from the first to spear a bear... it has been done dozens of times, effectively, lethally... he just had to go and put it on YouTube... and another pizz-ant politician is going to "grand-stand" on the issue and act shocked and horrified... the fact is that it was a lethal kill... and many bears have run further after being lung shot by .300 Magnums...

And what is all the criticism about because he got excited after the throw... of course he did... he practiced for months and invested a lot of money into the attempt... he could have taken the easy way out and used a rifle, but he choose a very difficult route to a goal... and having achieved the goal, he was understandably elated... critics, give it a rest.

Dozens? Like millions of dozens?

WHAT!? Bbe ashamed of how i procure my food, no thanks. Id be more ashamed walking out of McDonald's eating some science experiment patty whilst growing an extra chin. At least your cousin from Canmore is on our side.

What form of hunting will be banned next? No more slingshot or pellet gun for grouse or rabbits? We have ever more of our freedoms eroded every day.

Case in point: At the Manitoba Wildlife Federation 2015 Annual General Meeting a resolution from one branch was put forth to extend upland bird (grouse) hunting an extra week or two so it would extend into the Christmas season, so that when families were together for the winter holiday they would have the choice and opportunity to hunt with eachother. Seems resonable no? However, it was voted down and did not pass. Manitoba Wildlife Federation branches themselves voted to not allow the resolution to exend grouse hunting over the Christmas holidays.

If we as hunters, anglers, sportsman and conservationists cannot agree with and support eachother on some very basic issues and policies like season dates, baiting deer and elk, and crossbow during archery season, how the hell can we defend what we cherish so dearly from the other 95% of the population?

We're all going to lose our right to hunt eventually. Government already sees it as a priviledge which they will not hesitate to take away. Democracy rules and we're the minority. Even if our goverment is here to serve us we're not the special interest group they want to be associated with. Our rights may be taken away much sooner than we think.
