Alberta Bison special lic draw

Is the draw for Albertan's only or can out of provincer's apply?

I think the only draws available to non-resident Canadians are trophy antelope and sheep, and antlered mule deer, whitetail, elk, and moose. So apparently not, unless I missing something in the hunting draw regulations.

Unbelievably many people who will get drawn will never make an appearance. They are totally unprepared and having no knowledge of the area, animals and the weather conditions, will just say to heck with it when the season rolls around and it is 40 below and snowing. Too bad because some of us really want to do the hunt.

The rumor mill info I have for this buffalo hunt is that there will be 300 tags.
200 tags for the local natives, 100 tags available by draw. The native hunt will occur for 1 or 2 months prior to the start of the Jan 1 to Feb 28 draw hunt. By the time the draw hunt starts you will not find buffalos standing in the ditch. You better have snow mobiles and toboggans to find them and haul them out.

don't forget to dress warm boys.....
been know to get to -50!!
Check over on the other site-Alberta Outdoorsman-lots of talk about the Bison hunt there.

I shot a bison in 2005 in the Yukon here.

Fack me it's a lot of work cutting one of them beasts up.
2 guys and about 6 hours to skin and cut him up. I had trouble walking for about 3 days after the fact.

Went on a hunt around 2001 or so and there were 6 of us. One guy continuously sharpening knives and the other 5 cutting away. We skinned it out for a full size mount!

I hate to see how things would turn out if one felt threatened for his life by the locals. If I were in the middle of nowhere and someone tried to burn my veicle or similar, I would feel threatened.

Is all thisjust rumor? anyone have any experiences ?

I hunted bison up in the Caribou Mountains a few years back (4, 5 maybe), we had no trouble with the locals at all. Your mileage may vary. - dan

No rumor to it, that is straight from the ministers office press release.

You're right.

I am only a couple of hours from this hunt and people aren't being practical. Most hunters aren't prepared for this kind of hunt, but the idea of saying I have a buffalo tag, seems to override that.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out. 100 tags can make it very interesting. Question is, how many who win will actually go up there in Jan?

I'm sure the Ministry thought of that too and adjusted the tag limits taking that into consideration. Even with the rarity of the hunting opportunity, if 50% of tag holders actually show up, I would be amazed.

As reported by Pickles, I can't imaging spending 6 hours butchering one in the middle of Jan!

After applying for a bison tag in BC for many years, and talkign to several hunters who have doen the trip, I stopped applying this year, and figure if I ever need a bison head/hide, I'll go shoot one on one of those ranches that lets you pretend you are hunting.:p

Then I will et the rancher to bring his tractor out and drop it nicely in the back of my truck.:dancingbanana:

Ah. you can really tell the ones who have never been to Assumption.

Its never -40 and snowing its either one or the other.
and
There are no locals in the caribou mountains so of course you had no trouble with them.
and
you can voice your concerns all you want. What do you think the AB Government is going to do? Send extras patrols out to cover pretty much the entire NW of Alberta because you want to have a good buffalo hunt. There are 3 RCMP officers on that side of High Level have fun!

Oh and watch out for ol Iron T*TS shes real nice.

Good Luck!

Guys, I live in High Level and work in that area several times a week. I think the rumors of native vandalism are over blown. I've parked my truck close to the reserve at the Hay River bridge and gone fishing and fished along side of natives on the reserve, never had a problem. That said, I was talking to a RCMP officer stationed in Assumption several years ago and asked him whose wife he got caught screwing to get sent there. He said he requested it since he wanted to get into major crimes and Assumption had the highest level of capital crimes of any detachment in Canada. Apparently they could get sent anywhere they wanted after they put in a few years at Assumption. I didn't ask about the bullet holes in his truck. Those type of problems usually happen on the reserve when alcohol is involved, not in the bush.
Just a thought, but if I was really worried and traveling to this area to hunt with a large group I would consider contacting the band office to see if they would be interested in dropping the group off and picking us up at a set time for a fee. It wouldn't be guiding, but they would know of the best places to locate the bison and point you in the right direction. There are also a few outfitters in this area and they might do the same.
The actual area of the hunt is not that large and there are quite a few oil company owned roads in the area. Some are gated and locked so snowmobiles would be a must. The natives will probably push them into the bush a bit. If you can get a hold of some oil company maps of the area they are the best for seeing cut lines and winter only roads. A survey company in town has them for sale, but they won't sell them to anyone without permission from the company that commissioned the work. (No I won't sell mine). Cell service is not good in the area of the hunt. I usually lose service as soon as I take my phone off the booster in the truck. I would pick up one of those antennas that they sell at the Source that plugs into your phone. They actually boost the signal quite well.

North of 58, I had an idea sorta similar to that. Rather then go up there prepared for confrontation, it might work a bit better to cooperate with the First Nations band in the area.

I put in for that draw. I have zero experience up there, no snowmobile, nothing. If I do get drawn well then I will work out the logistics and go from there.

"There are no locals in the caribou mountains so of course you had no trouble with them."

Actually, the area was full of locals from John D'or Prairie and such, logging. We had to work our way in quite a ways to get past them. Having said that, the only issue we had was in High Level, where someone stole the hitch ball and shank out of the back of the hitch. Made it tough to pull the trailer out. - dan

I applied along with some friends that are more knowledgeable in hunting in the arctic that I am.... but apparently talking actual facts is a no-no, as it might reduce the chance of being drawn

If you can spare a couple of minutes, would you mind listing a few items that you would take on that trip? And maybe some advices for the noobs (like myself) ?
Much appreciated...

I was guiding north of High Level on year.. I think it was spring of 95.. Any way I had 3 natives try to steal my truck while i was in it..

They apparently have a healthy respect for a 12 gauge.. Long story short I still have my truck..

As to the Buff I'm curious why the draws are even available. Probably 15 years ago we asked for and recieved a letter from the minister responsible concerning Buffs.. To paraphrase .. there are no pure woodland buffs in the province.. there are no pure plains buff in the province.. they are all a hybrid and as such have no protection under the big game regs..shoot all you find outside of a park..

Any one know why this draw has been brought about???? Maybe just to let people know..

Thanks
