So I got a call from my mother who lives out on a acreage the other week. She’s been having some problems with coyotes, apparently they even approached my father one day. She asked me to come out there with my guns, I haven't made my way out there but today she phones me a bit shaken and says that one of her dogs just about go picked up and carried away (Yorkie’s, figure they're a light snack) She's called fish and game apparently and they said get a gun and shoot em, either burn the carcass or leave it in the woods to rot.

Now my questions are, Im not a seasoned vet so I do need some help from you guys.

1) Only rifles I have are chambered in 22lr, 308 and 12ga cylinder bore with no chance of choke. considering my latest purchases (I am pretty much addicted) my wife would probably want to kill me if i went out and bought a 243. So... is this way too much for a simple coyote? Is there any specific type of round I could use that would maybe expand more so it doesn't still go a mile down the road after exiting?

2) She has neighbors but they are well out of the 200 yard range that the fish and game lady told her, and it could be possible to angle myself against a dirt mound. I was going to go to each of her neighbors and tell them what we planned to do. Would this be wrong? I would never shoot in the direction of their house.

3) How do others go about shooting on private land? Just some general rules you guys use. I’m mostly a range rat so out in the real world with firearms is a new thing to me that I’m generally paranoid of.

4) Am I safe to kill these things without a hunting license? I read on Mywildalberta.com that a resident doesn't need one for Coyotes on land they have access to, just wan to clarify.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't get back home for another week but when I do, I plan to sit in the back of my truck with 308 and a loaded shotgun (00 buck shot) incase one of em gets a little closer than I would like (better with the scatter effect than shooting a running target. Paper and steel don't like to run that much)

Thanks for your time, I'll be monitoring this thread closely so hopefully I go home with a good direction.

1) No .22. .308 for distance and 12 gauge 00buck for up close. Do they come close to the house when your folks are out in the yard with the dogs? Also, get BT hollow points for your .308. Even regular soft point ammo should be fine.

2) Ask your folks if the neighbours are hippies. If they are, you're going to be in for a rough time. If not, they probably don't like the coyotes either and will be very happy that you're willing to blast softball sized holes in the ####ers.

3) Try not to kill anyone. I joke, I joke. Just be sure of where your shots are going to go. Go for a good walk around the land you'll be hunting on and get a feel for it. Make sure that the directions that you think are safe to shoot are in fact safe.

4) They are vermin. Choot 'em!

I'll let others take it from here. Good luck. Post pics if you whack a bunch. Adrian needs someone to compete with.

Thanks for the tips guys. The coyotes do come to the yard when my parents are out. Apparently when my father tried chasing one out of the yard it ran a bit and then turned and started back towards him. This will be interesting to say he least.

^ How much land are you talking about? If there's a few quarters or something, it's not like you need to be anywhere near the house. Or maybe there's adjacent crown land? Those fcukers will be wandering all over the 'back 40' too ya know?

If it's only an acreage, and all the other residences are small acreages, then using the .22LR and 12ga is maybe the best way to go. But I think I'd be talking to all the neighbors to at least get a feeling for this. They might love the idea of you blasting the critters.

Sounds like the 12 gauge is the ticket for these ones. It'll put some fear into the others too.

Looks like there is a good mile or two between my parents and their neighbors. Don't own a crossbow and Something tells me my 12 ga wont work, it's a Mossberg 590a1with the 20' barrel and a full size magazine. Anyone want to sell a cheap 243 lol. They have a dugout dug and the dirt was put right beside it, problem is about 200 yrds away maybe less is the township road. First thing i'll do when I eventually get home is head out and talk to her neighbors to figure out how they feel. Thanks again guys.

Friends used SKS's 10 years ago, I moved since then. Check the regs, and buy a cheap SKS with ammo. Watch your arcs, know whats behind and have fun. From what the guys told me they get worse and worse, killed many of their dogs. The smart dogs survived!!!

If you need help, and are close to Calgary, lemme know. I'll come out and blast them for you.

^ THIS. If you're nearby we'll look after em.

Alternately: these sound pretty bold, I'd set up bait and a blind and smoke em close with 00 buck.

(actually I should remind myself if you can bait for coyotes before I give that advice . . . . replace "bait" with "vibrating rabbit call")

I'm in Cold Lake and always willing to partner up with other Coyote hunters if you're near here.

.308 works fine I use it myself for lack of something smaller.

Alberta you can hunt Wolf or Coyote without a license any time of year, on private property you have right of access to according to Alberta Regulations. If they are in a town, or village or populated area however, the local bylaws may prohibit you so watch for this.

Find out if there are local by-laws that prohibit discharge of firearms within town limits.

It's in westlock county, out in the sticks a bit. Called them and they said kill em and throw em in the bush to rot, or burn em. I remember reading somewhere you can't shoot in the direction of a road or parallel of a road. Can't remember the actual document i read but thanks a ton for the info guys, it's a huge help.
