Alberta Hunting regs Page 32

Seems pretty self explanatory to me....What part are you confused about?

"Access for Control of Livestock Predation
Black Bear and Coyote*
Any person who is (a) the owner or occupant of privately owned land, or (b) authorized to keep livestock on public land, or (c) a resident authorized by a person described in (a) or a resident authorized in writing by a person described in (b) may, without a licence, hunt (but not trap) black bear or coyote on such lands, at all times of the year."

So does that mean I need nothing but written consent of the land owner to go hunt black bears? I'm asking this because my parents have a half section of land that has black bears living on that we have had some problems with. I'm not a hunter although I have a friend who has been hunting for quite a while with his dad. I'm setting up my own camp out at the land and right around where I want to set up, we found bear crap around there.

That's the way it reads to me.

On your parents place you need authorization only. Does not need to be written.

That's great. I'll go out there with a friend or two, have a fun weekend and we may go lookin' for some bears.

That brings me to my next question. What's are good cartridges to use for black bears? I have quite the arsenal to select from.

Is 7.62x39 123 grain softpoints good for them? I have a CZ858 that I love to use and it has a Leupold scout scope on it that is just great.

Your choice of calibers would be my last choice, I would certainly take a .44 Mag. or 30/30 over that cartridge and I consider them minimum.

I don't think I'd want to take either of my Lee Enfields out though. They're kind of heavy and the one needs to be scoped(no rear sight).

I would probably go out with two friends. We'd probably bring the CZ858, 12.5" Dominion Arms Grizzly, and an M14.

What other way could you have possibly thought about it?

I have friends with lots and lots of land up here... we hunt it, and we buy licenses..they have fields of oats as well as livestock..

The only people I know who have shot predatory black bears were because they were creating a problem, usually with bee hives or getting to close the house, or during calving not actually hunting them...

makes sense though..better to control predation then have to react to it, as were most of the cases I've seen.

My parents don't have any livestock and they don't live up there, but while out there we've had bears around and one who came right to our cabin and kept circling it all night around just outside the clearing. We have dogs that we take out there and my nephews who are little kids come out there too. I'm still in the clear to hunt these bears without a license?

Yeah your arsenal is sorta soft, and not doing any hunting before you need to do some sort of firearms safety training, wildlife identification (important to know the difference between blackbear and grizz if your land is in grizzly country, cuz you can't shoot them even if they are taking your cattle). Regardless of permission or not you need to know regulations specific to that zone on baiting. Though you can hunt them as pests there are still rules and regulations you need to follow.

I know from experience that hunting bears (especially w/o bait like I do in southern Alberta) is extremely tough work, they know the woods better, hear better have a better sense of smell, and are incredibly good at getting large bulks of bodies through thick brush without making any noise. Secondly bears are very thick skinned and tough muscled, and I shoot my bears with a 270win with 150gr bullets and even with that you need to take a very good/accurate shot, I would not use anything of a lesser caliber. Two years ago my best friend shot a very small one with his 270 but missed the shoulder joint, with a double lung shot this bear ran for over 500m hid bled for over an hour and a half while we tracked it (bear fur does not let blood flow out) then proceeded to jump up and run as we put another 2 in it. The only reason it didn't keep going was the last shot was in the back bone. AND remember most game won't turn and try to kill you either, so be careful, bear is a dangerous game.

Does the no license required refer just to the tag or would someone who has no WIN be able to come along too? I know a couple people who would love to come but don't have a WIN card.
