Yeah your arsenal is sorta soft, and not doing any hunting before you need to do some sort of firearms safety training, wildlife identification (important to know the difference between blackbear and grizz if your land is in grizzly country, cuz you can't shoot them even if they are taking your cattle). Regardless of permission or not you need to know regulations specific to that zone on baiting. Though you can hunt them as pests there are still rules and regulations you need to follow.
I know from experience that hunting bears (especially w/o bait like I do in southern Alberta) is extremely tough work, they know the woods better, hear better have a better sense of smell, and are incredibly good at getting large bulks of bodies through thick brush without making any noise. Secondly bears are very thick skinned and tough muscled, and I shoot my bears with a 270win with 150gr bullets and even with that you need to take a very good/accurate shot, I would not use anything of a lesser caliber. Two years ago my best friend shot a very small one with his 270 but missed the shoulder joint, with a double lung shot this bear ran for over 500m hid bled for over an hour and a half while we tracked it (bear fur does not let blood flow out) then proceeded to jump up and run as we put another 2 in it. The only reason it didn't keep going was the last shot was in the back bone. AND remember most game won't turn and try to kill you either, so be careful, bear is a dangerous game.
