Good day everyone

Just wanted to post up that it looks like the poker rally shoot is slated for July 9/10 2016! . The area is kind of central between Edmonton and Calgary for those that have not attended before !

The buy in will be 90$/per adult or 140$ for a family of four and kids under 16 shoot free for the two days of this event ,the shoot is open to families and we encourage everyone to partake . Once again supper will be provided but this year we would ask for 10$ for anyone that attends but didn't shoot , kids will still eat free of charge

Now the premise behind this event is you load your rifle on your quad or truck and take trails and roads to various shooting positions and engage targets at unknown distances. Then proceed to the next station on your map till you have completed the course. At each station you will engage targets that are assigned to cards that will be laid out at random by the rso that is attending each shooting station . At the end of the shoot the hands will be tabulated and prizes will be awarded on Saturday night.

There is camping in the area and I encourage people to bring your RV's if you have them . Now I shouldn't have to mention this but no drinking during the event will be tolerated ! You will be asked to leave and not refunded your entry fee!! After the event fill your boots and have fun tho! One change for this year is I will ask everyone to book their own stalls for the camping , the contact information for the camp site is provided on the entry form.

I am starting the list and would ask that you prepay before the 25 of June 2014. I am accepting emt's cash and checks . I will be making up an entry form that will be sent out to you and will need to be forwarded with your payment . I will have all these details worked out in the next day here . If you contact me at albertapokerrally@gmail.com , I will forward the entry form to you . I have 60 spots open and by the amount of interest generated by last years shoot spots will fill fast !

This shoot is limited to any round equal too or under a 300 win mag , and the average distance we will be shooting is out to 500m with a few extra targets farther out around 1200m.you will need 28 rounds for the whole event.

I look forward to seeing everyone out there for this shoot and meeting some new faces ! As a side note I should mention that there is a good chance things could be muddy! So be prepared for this in the event it rains or we have a ton of water !

ETA: Steve mentioned mud, dust is also a big possibility! I ate a lot of it last year on the four wheeler! Bring goggles and a bandana or buff if you're planning to offroad it

EMT has been sent Steve. I also had a question I asked in an email that maybe someone else might also have some information about.

Is there a rough outline of the course of fire available? I am very new to this and have never competed in a long distance rifle match. I am just wondering what type of positions we shoot from. Also what type of equipment are people using? Can you check zero or take fouling shots before starting?

Are the distances known? Are rangefinders and ballistic solvers allowed? Will there be wind flags? And can you bring a spotter?


I am particularly interested in having a spotter, both for the help and because my girlfriend may get bored at camp. Actually she will probably get even more bored spotting but I'm still curious.

Guys, don't get twisted up about the COF & all that. Some of the biggest features of this event focus on fun & commeraderie. Making connections and walking away with more knowledge than you had coming in, along with a sense of 'get off your ass & shoot' is the goal here. Your biggest competitor is likely to be yourself. Plenty of great people there to help out with calls.

To give you an idea of the pressure you will encounter, my daughter was 13 the first time we shot the event and she felt right at home through it all. So unless you're the most severe introvert in Western Canada, you'll be fine.

Come on out, visit with a lot of great folks, follow the herd, shoot your best, be safe, and have fun! Worry about nothing else.

Just to add a bit for the benefit of guys like Roddy, we advise you show up already zeroed and if you think it's really necessary, fouled. The day before the event will be spent finalizing course set up, so there will be no RSO's available to accommodate zeroing or practice (they are also range set up staff). We start early in the morning the day of, so no opportunity there, either.

As for equipment, you'll see all sorts. Black powder to high end customs, .22's (which were used extremely well last year, I might add), techy geek gear to improvised rests. Bring it.....run it. Biggest thing to keep in mind, however, don't be a human rain delay. We try to accommodate as many participants as possible and that requires structured and orderly flow. Shoot from any position you like as long as it's safe, though most shoot prone. Bring a spotter....hell, bring your mother if you think it'll help! I'd suggest she bring home made perogies to mitigate some of the peer ridicule that may come your way as a result, howeverLaugh2

Well thanks for that. I would just like to be able to practice a bit. I don't shoot standing as much as I should (although I did drop a coyote standing supported at 450 meters) and I don't even have a spotting scope.

I wouldn't have thought .22's would reach out that far, or do you mean .223?

Oh and I will try to get my mother to bring perogies but no promises.

I mean rimfire. Of course they have their limits. There were a couple young shooters last year who did very well with them, considering the limitations. I was trying to express that the equipment required isn't the most important thing here - participation is.

There are extremely few who practice practical field positions as much as we should. There is plenty of time between now & July, so get out & practice.
