for those who owned an SKS for a while I'd like to ask if it's worth the money.
I intend to hunt with this gun and practice shooting as ammo is cheap.
any regrets after buying it?

Great cheap plinker. Go for it. Everyone should own one. Just don't put your expectations too high. After all, they are surplus mostly cqb rifles. A wonderful way to get trigger time and not go bankrupt doing it.

had shot 2 crates out of it and the accuracy basically just disappeared. It also started falling apart.

At first I could hit pop cans most of the time at 100m. A year later I would be lucky to hit a fire extinguisher. The rear sight would shift a bit. The screw holding the bayonet on kept falling out. Guess where a spring loaded sks bayonet goes when the screw comes out. I will give you a hint I still have a scar from it.

I sold it and bought a marlin 795. no regrets. It was a lot of fun while I had though.

No regrets buying one- in fact liked it so much I bought another one! Just remember to clean it right after you use it - a day to two later you will notice it crapping up. Ammo is not as cheap as it was so buy now before it gets more expensive. By the case is the best way. If you are around London ON Bullseye sells ammo on stripper clips, worth getting 300/$75 and then use the bulk ammo with the clips as bulk ammo doesn't usually come on stripper clips. Spend your money on ammo rather than a fancy stock.
Enjoy!

I've tried AKM a few years ago and it was a pleasure to shoot that gun. How similar are these 2 guns?

If you're only going to get one, get a Yugoslavian model. The two I have are in minty condition and they are quite accurate depending on the ammo they're fed. Much better accuracy than the Soviet examples and better than the Chinese examples which are more accurate than the Soviets.

The Yugos can be a bit difficult to find but they come onto the EE on a regular basis.

Now, you also need to learn how to properly clean the socalled "cheap" ammo and understand it's cheap for a reason. Mainly because the primers contain corrosive chemicals. Also, the surplus ammo will not shoot to the same point of aim as North American produced hunting ammo.

You may also want to look into one of the no gunsmith scope mounts such as the Magwedge or similar models. There are others that are satisfactory as well.

absolutely - these are great reliable semis - real value for your dollars. Get a couple. Keep one as is and bubba the heck out of the other. And btw, if you keep this post going long enough you will soon see a bunch of gun snobs making tired comments about 1 barn MOA etc. Just ignore them. Hundreds of thousands of us own and like sks because it is inexpensive, reliable and fun to shoot. That bunch of soar losers just need a reference point to look down at people.

Great rifles! Fun, durable and cheap! Just don't expect incredible accuracy out of it. More than good enough for hunting however. If you're tall you might find the length of pull a bit short (I'm 5'11" and it doesn't bother me)

You can still find them on sale occasionally for under $200 if you look.

I loved my first one so much I bought a second one! It's also a great rifle for teaching new shooters

when AK is used as a semi: lots of similarities - sights, recoil. Different ergonomics due to the grip. Sks is a longer rifle but even then it may feel not long enough especially if you are tall.

I'm not tall at all.
I intend to shoot coyotes and other varmint but I'd like to try it on whitetail as well.

You're doing it wrong

you may like it then. however, the iron sights no longer work with my old eyes. And of course, you will need soft point ammo if you are planning to hunt with it

If it fell apart and the accuracy suffered so catastrophically, there had to have been Something wrong with your CIL. That is not normal. Buy another, try again is my suggestion
