All QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT movie

I re-watched this new version and 1917 back to back on Remembrance day. Ive seen other WW1 movies like War Horse, Passchendaele and the 1970s All Quiet On The Western Front. And thought this new version surpasses those by a fair amount. 1917 was really good until the canal scene. After that it seemed the producers tossed logic out the window in favour of artistic cinematography.

Finally finished it. Movie was sh$t in my opinion. Another wasted opportunity to have the money / budget / production potential to make an amazing movie but again falls short.

Started watching it on Netflx tonight, I didn't even realize it was there, or a German production. Not impressed.

Grizz

I was excited for the hype. All in all it was ok. Some scenes were a bit unbelievable, which detracted. Especially the end , where it seems a light switch was turned and everyone went from brutal murder to zombie walk in an instant. And yes, the flamethrower scene seemed to rely heavily on the audience to 'suspend their disbelief ' in order to demonstrate the effects.

I'm glad I watched it on Netflix at home. Would be kinda bitter if I spent money in theaters. Maybe it's because of the name, and therefore expectations that come with it

The obvious political addition to the movie was the Jewish member of the squadron in the film was a fictional character and meant to show to modern audiences that Jews had actually contributed to the war effort, contrary to what the German public were let to believe after the war. To me the lame part was that the story line was dominated by a romance for dramatic purposes.

But, I believe von Richthofen did loose his enthusiasm for the war closer to his death. Throughout his autobiography, the war is portrayed like it's all a game, a sporting hunt full of rules and chivalry. From what I've read of bits of his translated diary added in at the end of the later versions of the book which had been a home-front propaganda hit, it is understood that von Richthofen's view of the war did change after he returned to the front from his head injury and although he was excited that his his book the "Der Rote Kampfflieger" was such a success and even going to be published in England, he regretted the "insolence" expressed in it: "I now have the gravest feeling that people have been exposed to quite another Richthofen than I really am"

The nature of the air war had changed and become less of a sport: "I think of this war as it really is, not as the people at home imagine, with a Hoorah! and roar. It is very serious, very grim..."

The war went from being a big game to a grinding bloody struggle for national survival, Then he was killed in combat.

In Richtofen's letters home in the months before his death he had become morose and depressed about the war and lamented the loss of so many young friends. Even in those times when people were much more easily manipulated it was only a matter of time until the truth became apparent.

Couldn’t make it past the first scene where they’re all crying in the bunker and it takes a direct hit. That scene and the following 5 minutes were honestly some of the worst I’ve seen in a while. More plot holes than shell craters.
