allowable hunting ammo

Buy whatever you want for plinking ammo, cheap HP or cheaper milsurp FMJ is good since you might go through hundreds of rounds at a time...
Buy 1 box of $25 soft points which will be more appropriate for hunting. Fire five rounds to confirm the POI is the same as your plinking ammo. POI should be close enough at ethical 7.62x39 range for the same weight bullet. The rest of the box will last for several more years hunting. Ammo is the cheapest part of hunting so use something that will not compromise knockdown power.

best bet is to buy a bunch of different hunting ammo in 7.62x39 and find what shoots the best group don't worry about POI no wonder some people can't hit the vitals and say they need more gun

and when you find a good grouping hunting round buy as many boxes from the same shop checking the manufacturers batch numbers are the same.
please dont buy a box from 'here and there'.there maybe differences in the grouping s again.

Understood... thank you
I wouldn't be regularly hunting with them. I've recently purchased an SKS and figured that if I was buying ammo, I'd might as well buy some that could technically be used for more than target practice.

My primary hunting rifle is a savage 111 international trophy hunter in 30-06

Of course used with the 4 round mag, not the 10 round in the pictures.
why would you not us the 9 round mag to hunt .I sure would be using it ,Dutch

I've been under the impression that in BC there is a mag limit for all rifles while hunting... to ensure sportsmanship.
Also, if I miss with the first 4, no way in hell would I hit with the next 6.
It's a 12 round mag but I was advised to only fit 10. I had them recently custom made by a member on another forum.

No BC specific magazine laws for hunting rifles. Only federal magazine limits and limits on shotguns using shot. A bolt action rifle can have a hundred capacity magazine if desired.

I used to take out my ruger scout with the ten round mag before I made a 3 round magazine for it. For hunting I found its always jabbing my sides when walking with a sling and it also stops your from holding it in the hand comfortably in its balance point. How hot is that pencil barrel after 10 rounds of 30-06? I just throw the ten round mag in the backpack.

I'm in PG as well BTW
I've yet to shoot it with the new mag, just got it before Christmas
Depending on the weather, I'll hit the range up asap.

+1 on this. Do you know how many guys are out there hunting with old .303 Lee-Enfields? I don't think I've ever seen a 5 round Enfield mag... And kind of on the same lines, I hear about a lot of guys hunting predators with FMJ to minimize pelt damage. Is this just an Eastern Canada thing? Or is there an exception made for predator hunting? If so, it certainly wasn't covered in my CORE...

As far as I can tell, here in BC it's illegal to use anything but expanding ammo, even on Schedule C animals.

See Page 14 (Schedule C) and Page 17 (Legal Hunting Methods):

It is unlawful to use full metal jacketed, non-expanding, tracer, incendiary or explosive bullets for hunting or trapping game.

If you really, really want to see if you can ever use FMJs in BC, read the Wildlife Act and related acts, or ask a lawyer. I wouldn't risk it otherwise.

Bein from Ontario where dogs run our deer and hearing all 10 shots from somebodies old 10 foot long lever gun at the deer in front of those dogs is a daily occurrence for 2 weeks of the year. The guys that use pumps and semi's all carry at least 2 spare clips, and bein thought of as a bunch of rednecks by the rest of Canada for how we hunt. You'd be totally amazed what those other 6 shots can do after you missed the first 4, alot of things can go wrong between you and the critter just sayin, keep this in mind... Now everybody proceed to bash me.

In the last 4 years I've shot 8 rounds and taken 7 critters while hunting ,6 deer and an elk.The reason for the 8th was the 7th didn't completely dispatch the 800 lb cow Elk.
My magnums hold 3 rounds, the others hold 4 or 5 and usually I toss a few away because of being scarfed up from loading and unloading.
Use a rifle suitable for the area,if your in Griz country hunting deer or bigger don't take a 223 unless you like pissing them off. Just cause a mag holds 10+ rounds doesn't mean it needs to be full.
If you need that many rounds you should probably practice more or get your scope fixed.
Oh and a lot of us rednecks can shoot pertty good ,it's the gucci wearin weekend warriors I worry about.

Yeah, lots of guys don't get it. In Ontario we can party hunt and when someone yells "DEER DOWN!", it quite easily could be plural form of "deer". More ammo can easily mean more meat.

Well holy moly besides Dutch and Captonion I think you're the only person who agrees with this kind of huntin! I use a pump 30-06 and carry 3 clips with me. To the OP you got 10 round clips use em it's better too have em and not need em then need em and not have em!

Thank god there's a full auto ban.You guys would be clear cuttin the forests

Well there's #1
