OK my father in law who took me hunting called me a suck for being extremely mad about almost getting shot. I think I had the right to fume. You tell me.

We were out deer hunting with permission on a farmer's section of land. He didn't tell us that others were hunting the land (perhaps he did not know). I had just parked my truck at the end of a windbreak and was standing at the tailgate when I hear fffffffffffffffffffft thwap zing. A round had hit a tree ten feet to my left and ricocheted directly in front of me and another hunter. I estimate the richochet passed about 4 feet in front of us. I never heard the shot.

We got down and started yelling. After a minute I flew the truck across the field. Nobody turned up to apolologize or admit to the shot. In fact they simply disappeared. I found some 7mm brass in the area. That would have hurt a bit.

I don't know how another hunter could have missed the sight and noise of my truck or not seen the blaze we were wearing. For a while I thought that the shot was intentional.

So am I suck for being royally pissed?

you have the right to be mad..you did get shot at afterall...

what do you mean you didnt hear the shot??

maybe somebody thought you were trespassing and figured they'd send you on your way off 'their' land

I did not hear the shot at all. I only heard the bullet flying through the air and the impact and ricochet.

I also thought I may have been trespassing as I drove in between two fields. The farmer did tell us it was a section and there were no other farmhouses even close. We were definately in the area he had indicated as his land and were only a few hundred yards from his home. In any case a warning shot is attempted murder in my book. Initially I also thought it was one of my party who were pushing but they had not fired any shots.

You may not be that far off base , I would hope this was not a scare tactic.
I was hunting alone in an area , some fellas showed up . I did not see them come along , I was on the down side of a clearcut. They parked beside my car. Then they set up a target in the slash and started firing. I took cover , and when they stopped. I unloaded 2 rounds into a stump ahead of me .To let em know someone was around.
After a few minutes I crawled out of my hole in the brush to confront them. It was a scare tactic, and they let on like they set up targets at random to check their guns. I was pissed , big time. Some people just should stay home.

I'd be pissed and no, you're not a suck.........stray bullets kill. I had a buddy get hit in the leg by a ricochet 9mm after it hit steel. It dropped him to the ground, withing seconds he had a welt the size of a muffin top in his mid thigh. This was at a controlled shoot in an indoor range with an angled steel backdrop. The soft tissue injury was good but if the bullet would have hit his face or eye he surely would have been much more seriously hurt.

If you didn't hear the shot, it likely was a stray, from a long ways off. The fact that you heard the bullet travelling through the air indicates the bullet was already tumbling, probably from a previous ricochete. That could explain why you didn't find anyone around either.

Or I could be wrong and they are out to get you......

Did you buy a lotto ticket?:D

Shots on an open prairie are very difficult to hear...esp. if the wind is blowing from you to the shooter . Noticed that in Delorraine Manitoba .

I completly disagree with all of you that agree he should be pissed. I would be counting my blessings, but pissed? Who you mad at? Some one shot at something that was a long way from you or you would have heard the shot. They could have been miles away and missed there target. Or ricochet off something. Think how many times you have shot and don't know for sure where the bullet went. Even if you have a backdrop you can't predict where ricochet's are going to end up.
I too have had bullets hit close to me, I layed flat on the ground as soon as the first one hit. The people shooting had no way of knowing I was there (I was in camo). They were shooting at an elk I was stalking. I never got mad, it didn't even cross my mind to get mad. As I said above, I just counted my blessings.

i would be quite pissed as well but you never know it could have been a stray from a long ways away a 7mm or and mag cal will travel over 6km with out any problem.
talk to ya all later

From my experiences one never takes it that if they have permission they are the sole hunters on that property. The area that I hunt in is starting to get ridiculous with the amount of outside hunters. The local hunters are having to fight people off on there own property when trying to hunt it themselves. I take it as a personal action to pay attention when I go into an area to see if I can see any hunters around on the adjoining properties. I try to make myself aware to that group where I am and hope that they have enough sense to be cautious.

Well. About it being a stray. We were possibly on the highest point of land on the section and the bullet struck the tree about 5-6 feet up. Had it not struck the tree it would have continued directly into the property owner's house judging by where I found the brass. A stray is one thing but this was open cultivated land broken into 40 acre (or so) sections by single tree lines.

A stray may have been possible but my instinct based on my surroundings tells me that it wasn't definate. Remember that I had just seconds before drove my truck through the area and it should have been visible and audible for miles.

I'm thankful I wasn't hit

You are NOT a suck, I enjoy living, and if some one tries to remove that enjoyment from me, I get pissed.

Years ago-2 bullets passed overhead, heard them go, then the shot, found shooter, asked where are you? He said lost, I took his gun, unloaded it, and asked him to turn around, there was Kamloops pulpmill smoke stack-OH.!!!!!
Just great- no more hunting with that yahoo!

Crap! Glad you didn't just show up on the news.

I've almost been shot a couple of times... I had to totally re-think my hunting clothing.
