Am I going to be hassled if I paint my LAR mags?

just checked my LAR mags I just got from SFRC. The writing is stamped on, good to go with black paint

LOL.

So I took one mag apart and just quickly shot it with some flat black paint I have laying around to see if it looked alright.

Pro-tip for anyone considering doing this: sandpaper the outside of the mag body because the paint that I sprayed just came off when I rubbed it a little bit.

If you can, degrease/sandblast/wipe with tack rag/oven bake/cool down/apply metal etching primer then finish coat.

This would give you the best result.

paint type recommendation?

If you take the mag down to bare metal,
Go to your local automotive part shop and check out their auto body section. They will have metal etching primer that work with the same brand paints (spray cans). I'm specially thinking flat black but you should be able to dig up Duracoat spray bomb that comes in multiples colors. Check out there website.

Why not take a picture of the unpainted mag with your cell phone, keep it on the phone, paint away. A pistol mag does not stop being a pistol mag because of cosmetic paint. Just be prepared for the discussion should the matter come up.

I currently use Beretta 96 40 cal mags's in my Beretta 92FS. I shoot 14 9mm rounds out of it. If someone asks why I can load up 14 rounds I happily explain the law to them. Bottom line its still a 10 round pistol mag, nothing illegal about it. Same goes for the LAR mag's painted or not.

The issue is that once painted it now looks excatly like a rifle mag which is limited to 5.

Your comparison dosent work as your 40 cal mags still look like pistol mags. Do you think any police officer in Canada can tell the difference between a LAR mag and a 10 round AR mag pinned to 5?

Dont you think that leaving the markings on it might save you a bunch of time and possibly money to prove other wise?

Who gives a #### if it looks ridiculous, its either in your rifle or your range bag anyways.

Just leave the little bit non painted if it isnt stamped and have the info sheet from the RCMP with you. Odds are if you have an ATT, everything is registered and stored correctly, and you arent being a ####, you wont have any LEO problems anyways.

Shawn, that is why I would have the picture of the mag with printing prior to painting. But your right the printing would make it easier for sure to explain to any ill inform range officer or police officer . Heck you could bring up the ruling on a smart phone and show them. The police officers I know would understand the difference once explained and shown the picture.

Personally i would not be concerned, but would half expect to explain the situation just like my loading 9mm in 40 cal mag's. Everyone has there own level of comfort with these situations and should choose what their comfortable with as long as their within the law. The LAR mag's would look great painted and coupled; fact remains they are still 10 round pistol mag's.

How does just painting something make it prohibited????

Because how can anyone other than YOU tell if it is a LAR15 pistol mag or just another AR15 Mag?

And btw, I did phone the firearm section in the RCMP and a guy told me that the markings must be on the mag or it is illegal. So I believe what what he says.

To save the trouble and hassle, why not just leave the marking on there? So you dont have to waste time to explain to everyone police officer that you encounter....instead you can use that time to shoot!
If you get charged for having illegal rifle magazine, it is not just 'let's go to court'....it will cost you thousands of dollars to defend yourself (Yes, you have to pay for the lawyer).
