thanks for the advice. i think i will go with the 300 win mag.

am i correct in thinking that because it is a heavier rifle, 8lbs, with an approx 24" heavy barrel that this could reduce muzzle jump and handle recoil of a 300wm a bit better? or am i totally out to lunch. Thanks again guys

Yes I think your correct in thinking that the heavier rifle will be easier to shoot, but it will be much harder to carry up the side of a mountain. My .300wsm is just under 7 lbs scoped and loaded, it puches a bit but it's not too bad to carry. Just my 2 cents.
