Ambi mag release for STI.

I know Smith & Alexander make them for single stacks, and for Para's, but what about for STI's? I've got an STI Trubor that I just picked up, and being left handed, am having a really hard time getting used to the mag release being on the left side. In standard division, I shot a CZ, so it was ambi from the factory. I've done about 400-500 dry fire reloads in the past couple of weeks, and it's just not working out. What options do I have? Thanks.

Learn to use your index finger to release the mag. That will end up being faster than the 1/2 flip you have to do with a "other side" mag release. I say "other side" because the 1911 was made for the left hand in the first place. and for the trigger finger to release the mag.
 
Can you do your mag change with your trigger finger?
I enquired about and STI and getting a Left handed mag release, as (although I am right handed), I would prefer to press the mag release with my trigger finger.
 
Well, it seems that I just happen to have longer fingers than most people. lol. I would have to have a 4th knuckle to get my index finger that far back. I was spoiled with the CZ because it was ambi from the start. After over 500 dry fire reloads, I'm still not comfortable with using my index or middle finger. I've given it the old college try, but schools out. Atleast I've got the winter to figure it out. If you can get ambi mag release's for Para's and single stacks, then you must be able to get them for STI's. Don't they have left handed people in Texas?

I too use my trigger finger to press the mag release for a reload. The added benefit to this is that you know your finger is nowhere near the trigger when it shouldnt be :)

In some of my 1911s the mag release is very stiff and hard to press with the trigger finger, its easy to correct this by trimming off a coil or so of the mag release spring. (Dont take too much off in the beginning or you may need to find a spare spring to get things working again)
 
I've seen 4 ND's as a result of people using their trigger fingers to hit mag buttons. One on a Walther P99, one an HK USP, and two on 1911 type guns. which is why I think the thumb is better for hitting the button.

Ouch! :eek: Apparently some shooters are not paying attention to where their trigger finger is when they are not engaging targets.
 
I truly believe that the finger entering the trigger guard for any reason other than to depress the trigger is simply a lack of concentration. It's about slowing down, and focusing until it becomes second nature. Maybe it slows me down a couple of tenths, but I stick my trigger finger WAY out there when doing reloads with my thumb on the CZ. This is one reason that learning to do the opposite is quite difficult. Also, it seems very obvious to me that if I don't have to change my grip to release the mag, my follow up shot to a reload should be that much faster and more accurate. Well I ordered the right side mage release a few hours ago. $150.00, but worth it in my opinion. I mean what the hell. I've already got $3800.00 into the gun, so it seems little price to pay to be more comfortable with it. Funny, I got the guy from Speed Shooters on his cell at the U.S. Nationals. That's what he told me anyway. He said he'd be back in the office by Monday, and I'll have it in 7-10 days. Once again, thanks for the help all.

Give us an update on the fit and finish of that part!
 
I will let you know how it looks if it ever gets here. It's sitting in Canada Customs right now I think. Last stuff I ordered that had to come through customs was there for 9 days. I spoke to Canada Post today and they don't know where in Canada it is, just that it's in the country. They THINK it's in customs, but aren't sure. I feel very confident that I will have the part by Christmas. lol. I have a match on the 12th of November and it's looking less likely that it will be here. I'll let you know.

They didn't ship it top you via UPS did they....!??!?
UPS are pricks. Canada Customs won't likely have any problems, but UPS has a policy to not knowingly ship and firearms parts, NONE. Even scopes are not immune to their policy.
I once had a front sight from Ameriglo sit at the border because UPS would not release it to Canada Customs.
USPS is much better and not likely to be delayed.

I shoot right handed and use my right middle finger to press my left hand mag release. My trigger finger is always where it is supposed to be ,up on the slide. = no problems
