Hi all,

I am wondering if any of you have used the American Eagle 150gr FMJ .308 in your bolt hunting rifles?

I have emailed federal to ask if this is 7.62x51mm NATO spec.

I ask because I have been warned aganist using 7.62x51NATO spec ammo in .308 Win bolt rifles due to pressure issues and shoulder dimensions.

However SAAMI does not warn against this on their site, as they do with interchanging .223 and 5.56x45 www.saami.org/Unsafe_Combinations.cfm

I do remember once firing RSA milsurps in a Sako Forrester and getting a stiff bolt lift...

Any insights?

Thanks

My take:

If it's called .308....it has to loaded to .308 pressures.

If it's called 7.62...it has to be loaded to 7.62 pressures.

If they were loading 7.62 pressures and calling it .308 federal would be in a world of trouble, wide open for a lawsuit.

You should be fine, load 'er up!

Thanks,
I see that Midway states that the AE is loaded to the same specs as Federal premiums, so its seems all good. As you state they are marked as .308 Win, not 7.62x51NATO.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it at all; I used it to 'break in' my Savage 10FCP and it did a fine job of it.

If you'd like to see how it shot out of that rifle, check post 1 of this thread I started:

Anymore questions, feel free to PM me - I've put 200 rounds of that stuff through my Model 10 as 'cheap' trigger-time, and to make fireformed brass for reloading (which I now use exclusively) so I can probably answer most questions you'd have about it!

I used 7.62 x 51 nato in my bolt gun and .308 semi Winny all the time when it was cheap to buy for practice. Now that it is so expensive it's not saving me any money to shoot milsurp. So for practice now American eagle FMJ will do if I can find it(same price now). The only warning I have ever seen about .308/ 7.62x51 is not to shoot .308 in a Military type 7.62x51 rifle as .308 can be loaded to a higher pressure then Milsurp, but not always. And yes this is the reverse of .223/5.56.

I always thought it was the other way around, so I googled it.....You are correct. I learned something new today.
