Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the rifle scene, and just picked up a Remington 700 cahambered in .308 WIN. I've been looking at the ammo available in this caliber, and have noticed that there are quite a few different bullet weights available, from a 140 grain, all the way to over 185 grain. So my question is this: How do I know which bullet weight to choose? I will be using my rifle primarily for target shooting, so will different weights be suited for different ranges? Or do I simply try them all until I feel relatively comfortable and pleased with one weight? Any advice to help me understand how to choose the proper ammo would be greatly appreciated.

model of 700 and twist rate would help up give you an answer.. somthing with a slow twist wont shoot the heavies very well, but a fast twist has the potential to shoot most any weight bullet and comes down to what your rifle likes

id be staying under 175 for a 1:12, probably even go down to a somthing in the 160 somthing range...

the "problem" with the remmington chambers is they tend to be throated very long, so its a huge jump for the lighter bullets to make, if i were you id try a few things in the 160-170 range, federal GMM will give you the best resualts for facotry ammo but it is pretty costly, i havnt bought ammo in YEAAAAAAAAARS but last i saw it on the shelf it was around 45+ for a box of 20

I have a Rem 700 5R (11.25 twist) and the best ammunition in it are Hornady Match BTHP 168gr and Nosler Match Competition 168gr...Accubond 165gr shoots ok... I would suggest you to buy few different ammo and give it a try...

If you are buying commercial ammo, the various 168HPBT and 175HPBT match ammo will probably work well (though they can be pricey!)

If you are handloading, a Sierra 168 or Sierra 175 is a good, easy, well-known choice of bullet. You can also shoot Sierra 190 Matchkings too, if you want to load the bullet out to touch or nearly touch the rifling.

I currently shoot a Savage Precision 10 in .308. I started shooting Hornady Superformance in 168 gr but have switched to 150 gr and love it. Nice groupings out to 500yds and very consistant loads.
