Ammo failure

Well i am back from my spring bear hunt today and i have a dilemma. Sitting in my tree stand watching waiting. Then it happens a beatiful black bear comes stumbling through the bush to our bait barrel. I watched the bear for a while waiting for a perfect shot and then i got it so after i push the safety off and get lined up, I pull the trigger and all i hear is "CLICK". I couldn't believe it at first I thought I screwed up somehow. While i am fiddling with my rifle the bear runs away. I pull the cartridge from the rifle and it still has the bullet in it and the primer is spent. So my question is should I try to get something out of Federal for their ammo failing or is this something that i just deal with and hope i am lucky next time. Any advice would be great

thanks in advance
Vince

Id check the depth of the dent in the primer. Have you had trouble before.? Id say its more a firing pin problem than a factory cartridge flaw. But Ive been wrong before. Take a real good look (compare) at that primer depth.

I'd send the cartridge to federal, with a note, telling them what happened. If they have any integrity, they will likely try to make it up to you. They would also want to check if the primer fired, to rule out a rifle problem.

If you rechamber that round and it fires on the second attempt it indicates there is not enough firing pin energy. If it doesn't go after a couple of tries it's a dead primer and your rifle is probably fine. Dud rounds are less common these days, but they still happen from time to time. Just pitch it - life goes on.

last night i emailed Federal to ask what i should do. They said to me it is possibly the rifle and possibly the ammo. They continued to say that "The understand my frustration and wish they could do more". I think that is a bunch of B.S. they don't care otherwise i am sure they would warranty their product. The ammo primer looks like it has the same dent as all of the rest i shot. So i believe it is the ammo, I just wish he didn't say he understands my frustration cause i think he has no idea. they should leave that off next time.

Welcome to the world of "Coporations":D :bsFlag: .

They probly dont care about a single round anyways, machines make em. Now if it were to be half a box (20 rounds) then they would be asking more questions.

actually wrong. federal is MUCH better then winchester.

I bought a bad box of federal and the same day a bad box of winchester ammo. NO IDEA HOW I PICK THEM.

I complained to both companies, and winchester was the one who said "#### off" (almost litterally)... NOT buying winchester again!

Federal said give us the box # for the ammo and we'll send you free coupons for them.

Federal is good.

I got a sabot shell with only half the sabot in it. I emailed them out of curtisy in case the had a manufacturing problem. They responded by thanking me for the email and they sent me a coupon too!

Other then that, harden the #### up and get over it!

You might want to get the headspacing checked on your rifle. It could explain that problem. Likewise you might want to thoroughly degrease your bolt (if it is a bolt gun). Excess lube in the bolt can congeal in colder temps and slow down the firing pin spring enough to make a poor hit on the primer. I had it happen to me and lost a really wide buck as a result! Once these have been ruled out, it is likely a primer failure. Boomer's suggestion to attempt to safely fire the round again is a good one. If it doesn't go, it is a dud!

Federal should be better than Winchester. Winchester is the worst as far as customer relations, IMHO.

Sorry about the bear, I feel your pain:( One of my outfitter pals had a Sport click twice on a 600 lb black bear a few years back. That sounded like a headspace problem or primer seating problem to me.

Get 'em next time.

Well thanks everyone for your opinions I think i am just going forgive and forget and not let this situation get me down. I guess it just wasn't ment to be. The bear is safe thanks to Federal so maybe i should be happy about that.

Thanks again
Vince
