Ammo & Reloading Component Shortage Has Begun

Henry my order just got here (literally)... Only just closed the safe from putting away
Gotta love Canpar shipping my order to Toronto and then back to the Peg and then taking 4 days where everyone else takes 1 to bring it up....

When this happened in the winter of 08 09 after the US election I mentioned it at an Ontario shop in about Feb 09. They said oh thats just paranoia, everythings fine. A month later they had no stock and everything they had in for the next year and since was higher priced. I dont think they ever put the primer prices back to where they were the day they said its not true.

As usual Canadian shooters and loaders wont buy in a rush, (except those in the know on forums etc) and a month or so from now when the stores run out of stock and find out from their suppliers there is a delay then a lot of people will be stuck with no ammo or components. Get out and get stuff you need today because it is already drying up here. I bet 223 308 45 brass along with those size bullets primers and popular powder will be the hardest to find for the nex year. Same for ammo most popular and Military cals will be gone and the rare calibres wont be made as often since the assembly lines will probably stay tooled for 308 223 etc longer.

Of course a couple members will come along and show us they are still loading $5 a brick primers and WWII surplus powder but not all of us have been at it that long.

No, but you've been at it long enoughto know all about the 08/09 shortage. So you don't really have an excuse.

Myself, I learned my lesson in the mid ninties primer shortage. I've weathered every shortage quite well since then.
 
I went to stock up a bit here. Neither of the two big stores had 2400. One only had 2 cans of RL7. Nevertheless I ought to have stocked up on enough fun to last a year or so I figure. If nothing else I've got a lot of really old Pyrodex that I ought to use up, and plenty of old straight cartridges that it'll work in.

And if THAT runs out, then I guess I can ride my motorcycle more and cast a tonne of bullets for fun instead.

I'll have to order a few more bullet moulds through you, Henry.
 
Yep, glad I placed my order with you when I did Henry, just wish I had more cash right now so it could've been bigger. Hopefully $440 worth of components on top of what I already had will be enough for awhile....guess it may have to be.

And here I was thinking about getting equipped for pistol reloading. Eh, guess I could spend that money and time on getting educated.

It has and I'm a bit baffled by it. If you go on Midwayusa website they have nothing left really and no backorder. Reloading components specifically.
 
I could shoot and hunt for the rest of my life quite comfortably with present inventory. I highly recommend the practise of being prepared. It feels good!
 
I was starting to get a decent stockpile going, but you just know you're always missing something. This rash buying spree and the politics behind it actually has me concerned for the first time. The first shortage I experienced was understandable due to a war on terror, and the '08 '09 one I chalked up to extreme right wing loonies. BUt some of the talk coming out of the white house these days is quite concerning.

Time to scrounge, beg an overpay for whatever I don't have I guess :)

If current US supply is an indicator of future Canadian supply, the local Mao-Mart had 12, 20 and 410 birdshot but not much. No slugs. No buck except 410. No pistol ammo except a couple boxes of 32, 380, 40, and the expensive Gold Dot 45 ACP. No 22 LR at all. No centerfire rifle ammo except a few boxes of 30-06, 270, and 22-250.

The one LGS had a few boxes of 45 ACP and 40 S&W. No other ammo at all.

Get it while you can, Canadians.

Been there, done that. Just wait it out. As with everything, prices will only ever go up, not down, but supply will sort itself out.
